June 5, 1984: Jimmy Johnson is officially introduced to the media as the new head coach of the University of Miami. Filling the shoes of Howard Schnellenberger was not easy. At the time, Johnson was a virtual unknown coming from Oklahoma State. Because Schnellenberger decided to leave UM late, Johnson did not have the luxury of a spring practice. He also had to inherit Schnellenberger's coaching staff. Johnson endured a rough first season with an 8-5 record that included 3 consecutive losses to Maryland, Boston College and UCLA to end the year. But he would rebound and place his unique stamp on the program with a swaggering style. From 1985 to 1988, the Canes went 44-4 and won the 1987 national championship. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2012.
