Horses Helping People Help Themselves

The rhythmical, three dimensional movement of the horse at a walk stimulates movement to the rider that is similar to human walking. The total development of the rider, including their social, emotional, cognitive and motor skills, are enhanced through interactions with the horses, the volunteers and the outdoors.

☀️ We’re gearing up for a big week at The Riding Therapy Center! In addition to our regular therapeutic riding lessons, we’re thrilled to welcome our summer campers for a week full of learning, laughter, and horse-filled fun on Monday morning!

🐴 Campers will dive into hands-on horsemanship activities like grooming, tacking, riding, and even horse health care. They'll also enjoy fun summer-themed crafts and games — and cap it all off with a special end-of-week Horse Show to show off their new skills to family and friends!

🐴 Meet Paloma — or “Pal,” as she’s lovingly called at The Riding Therapy Center! Today, we're thrilled to highlight this gentle soul and her incredible contributions to our equine-assisted programs. Born on April 1, 2002, Pal joined the RTC family in 2008 thanks to the generosity of a local Victoria family, and she’s been changing lives ever since.

✋ At 13.8 hands tall, Pal’s smaller frame and smooth, gaited movement make her the ideal partner for riders who need a more stable, gentle ride. Her calm nature allows newer and less experienced riders to gain confidence in the saddle, while also supporting young individuals with physical challenges like muscle stiffness or limited flexibility. After years of dedicated service, Pal is one of our most experienced and beloved therapy horses.

🐎 The movement of a horse closely mimics the natural human walking gait, offering unique physical benefits for individuals with limited mobility or motor control. At The Riding Therapy Center, our PATH Intl.-certified program uses this motion to strengthen core muscles, improve balance, and enhance coordination.

🏇 Meet Finn, one of the most beloved members of our herd at The Riding Therapy Center! Born on February 24, 1999, in New Mexico, Finn is a thoroughbred with an impressive pedigree. As a descendant of the legendary Secretariat, he was bred for speed — but his greatest achievement wasn’t on the track. Instead, Finn found his true calling through therapeutic riding, where he brought strength, comfort, and healing to so many.

🤠 Though he never raced, Finn’s journey brought him to Edna before officially joining the RTC family in June 2015. As our tallest horse, his long stride provided a one-of-a-kind sensory experience that greatly benefited our riders, helping them develop balance, coordination, and confidence.

💕 These days, Finn is enjoying a well-earned retirement in our peaceful pastures. Even in retirement, horses like Finn require daily care — from feed and supplements to regular vet visits. Through our Horse Heroes sponsorship program, you can help support Finn and the rest of our herd, who have devoted their lives to changing others.
