With Thanksgiving coming up here in the US and many people having large gatherings with kids and dogs, this is my annual reminder that most things that kids do to dogs are not cute and it's the adults who are responsible for keeping kids and dogs safe together.

The onus is on the parent to teach children age-appropriate ways to interact with dogs.

The responsibility of safety is NOT 100% on the dog.

Teach the kids, not just the dogs.

Manage. Separate. Supervise.

Let's work to reduce dog bites.

Your dog shouldn't just have to tolerate being manhandled.

Pet of the Week: Dani!
4 months old, spayed female, tortoiseshell markings, short hair

Our flabbers are positively GASTED that nobody has scooped this girl up yet! Dani and her siblings were only about 10 days old when they arrived with their mom, and she has grown up into the sweetest, snuggliest, purriest girl! She's full of kitten curiosity and super playful, both with her human pals and her fellow kittens. Dani can't wait to have a bigger world to explore and a partner in crime (with thumbs!) to help her get into all kinds of mischief! Pet of the Week: Tinsley!
10 months old, spayed female, gray and white markings, short hair

Meet the president of the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee! Tinsley tips the scale at just over 5 lbs, and although she may still do some growing, we're willing to bet that she'll always be petite. She can be just a touch shy at first, but give her a pet or two and you'll hear her big, rumbly purr start up! Itty bitty girl, big heart ❤ Tinsley is sweet, gentle, and always up for a chance to pounce after a toy. She gets along well with other cats, so she says to bring on the playmates - human and feline! Call for Fosters!

CALLING ALL BOTTLE BABY FOSTERS! Kitten season is here and we're gonna need your help!

We're seeking fosters willing to stay on stand-by for the most vulnerable babies: the ones without a mother who need to be fed with a bottle. We never know when they're going to arrive, but when they do, they need help immediately - which is why we need some reliable foster homes in our pocket to reach out to for help at short notice.

WHAT'S INVOLVED?
A big time commitment: feedings every 2-6 hours for up to several weeks, depending on age of the kittens.

Potty breaks with every feeding: infant kittens require stimulation to eliminate waste and can't use the litter box until they're about 4 weeks old, so you'll have to help.

Monitoring growth and health: making sure kittens are eating enough, gaining weight, and developing well, and notifying WHS staff about any concerns right away.

Reliable transportation: must be able to get kittens to WHS for any needed check-ups or veterinary care, potentially on short notice.

WE PROVIDE:
Training and support
Formula and bottles
Food
Heating pad
Kitten-safe litter
Blankets, towels, toys as needed
Crate or large carrier based on kitten size
Veterinary care

YOU'LL NEED:
A big heart: bottle babies are a lot of work! But it's totally worth it to watch them grow up.

A tough heart: infants, especially newborns, are extremely vulnerable. Even if you do everything right, sometimes they don't survive. It's something a bottle baby foster (and their family) needs to be prepared for.

An exit strategy: it can be hard to give babies up when it's time, especially when you're new to fostering! You need to be aware that saying goodbye is part of the job: kittens must be returned to WHS by the time they're 8 weeks old so they can find their forever homes.
