Shelter Scoop Sunday

Welcome to Shelter Scoop Sunday, a new series where weā€™re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what happens at the Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County.

Thereā€™s a lot more to sheltering animals than kennels and adoption. Every day, our team works to provide the care, enrichment, socialization and positive experiences that help dogs and cats thrive while they wait for their forever homes.

First up: the Splash Pad.

Our shelter dogs all get time outside of their kennels every day, and dogs who enjoy the water get scheduled Splash Pad time.

Splash Pad time is more than just fun. Enrichment is an important part of shelter life, giving dogs opportunities to play, explore, interact with staff and experience something different from their daily routine. It also helps strengthen the bond between our dogs and the people caring for them.

Different dogs have different Splash Pad days, and not every dog is a fan of the water. We tailor enrichment to each animal and what they enjoy. Sting was adopted on Thursday, but he was kind enough to model for you during his Splash Pad time before he left.

We Need Pup-Peroni & Nudges!

Thanks to everyone who donated beef broth, weā€™ve been putting it to good use making enrichment treats for our shelter pups. Students from SDIRC recently joined us to volunteer and help make the treats, too!

But now weā€™re dangerously low on Pup-Peroni & Nudges, and itā€™s an urgent need. We need your help to keep our dogs happy and healthy!

Red is a big, gorgeous 86-pound boy with the most beautiful red coat. Heā€™s easy to leash, walks nicely past other dogsā€”even the noisy onesā€”and loves affection.

He is so sweet, and loves to lean his whole big body into you just to make sure you donā€™t stop petting himā™„ļø
