Our Paw Painting enrichment activity with some of the kittens was a smashing success yesterday! A messy, adorable success, and we’re happy to report the kittens had a great time. 🥰
Using food coloring as the “paint” to ensure safety, we rolled out a large strip of paper and taped it to the floor, set two blank canvases on top, and a three-sectioned paper plate with cling wrap covering it to hold the diluted food coloring options. We then let the kittens explore, play, and create!
At first, they were thoroughly entertained by just the paper taped to the ground. 😂 Then they each slowly began to check out and play with the canvases and paint palette. Nars was a natural! It didn’t take him long to dip his paws in to attack the food coloring and shake it to effectively splatter paint all over the canvases.
Once they were satisfied with their initial examination of the new items, we introduced toys into the mix. The kittens had a blast chasing after the toys, running through the food coloring, and stomping their creations into existence!
To ensure the activity was entirely positive, at no point did we attempt to make them paint, so we did not dip their paws into the food coloring to make prints on the canvas. To build confidence, to build trust with people, and to support natural kitty curiosity, it was important to let the kitties go at their own pace. This allowed us all to have a really fun time!
What do you think of their two new creations?
Enrichment is important for all species of every age, and we try our best to provide a variety of enriching activities and items to our rescues regularly. The most enriching activities are those that reflect natural behaviors and allow our pets to be the amazing, unique animals that they are. 🥰
