He wasn’t escaping. He was rehearsing control.

But what made it remarkable was not the act. It was the patience behind it.

Fu Manchu, an orangutan at the Omaha Zoo, spent his days watching. Not pacing, not panicking. Watching routines, hands, locks, and the rhythm of human attention.

At some point, scrap wire became more than debris. He bent it carefully, shaping a tool precise enough to work a lock. Then he concealed it in his mouth, pressed into the folds of his gums where no quick inspection would catch it.

He waited.

When the timing aligned, he removed the wire and let himself out.

Keepers would return to find him outside his enclosure, unhurried, almost casual, as if the barrier had never mattered. This happened more than once before they understood the pattern.

The solution was simple. Remove the wire.

The implication was not.

He was not reacting. He was planning.

And once you realize that, the cage starts to look like the least impressive part of the story.

To everyone who’s offered to help us in our time of need — thank you. Your support means everything.
As we work through relocating, we’re urgently looking for fosters and adopters.
If you’re able, come by after 1 PM to meet the dogs and cats and see who steals your heart.
You can call or stop by — every foster and every adoption truly helps us during this time. 🐾❤️

WRONG TEXT
He didn’t mean to send it.
Or maybe he did.
Some feelings don’t go away.
Even when people do.
The silence after hurt more.
Than the message itself.
But something shifted beside him.
A quiet reminder.
Not all love disappears.
Some of it stays.

Catnip repels mosquitoes far more effectively than DEET, but only when its leaves are crushed to release the active compound.

Here’s what actually makes that work.

The key ingredient, nepetalactone, does not just smell strong. It interferes with a mosquito’s ability to locate you at all. These insects rely on a layered system of cues like carbon dioxide, heat, and skin chemistry. Nepetalactone disrupts that system, throwing off their internal tracking before they can land.

But the compound is stored inside the plant. Intact leaves keep it sealed within tiny structures on the surface. Crushing the leaves breaks those structures open and releases a concentrated burst into the air, which is when the effect becomes powerful.

Lab comparisons have shown this disruption can outperform traditional repellents under controlled conditions. The catch is how it is used. It works best as a surrounding scent barrier rather than something applied directly to skin.

So a crushed handful changes the space itself, not just the person inside it.

What looks like a cat’s favorite plant is actually a chemical signal that can quietly reroute a mosquito mid-flight.

PSA Update:
Yesterday (4/24/2026) our practice was put in a situation we never saw coming. It’s been painful and unfair—but we want you to know one thing clearly: we are not stopping.
We will continue caring for your animals without interruption. We are still running business as usual, and we are not giving up on our clients, our patients, or our mission. Though we must relocate by 5/31/2026, this is only a setback—not the end.
Our priorities are simple:
• Keep patient care steady and strong.
• Find safe placements for our long-term boarders and rescues.
• Secure a new home for our practice.
• Support our team through this transition.
We’re shaken, but not broken.
Thank you for standing with us as we move forward with determination and heart.
