Current information regarding EHV-1.

We have received some questions about the current EHV-1/EHM outbreak. To date, cases associated with a large barrel racing event have been reported in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Colorado.

Since this is an evolving situation, the best way to stay on top of the most up to date information is through the Equine Disease Communication Center. This free, online resource reports cases of infectious disease submitted by veterinarians and state animal health officials. You can also sign up to receive updates by email.

At the time of posting, no related cases have been reported in California. For California-specific updates, visit the Animal Health Branch-CDFA. They also have an option to sign up to receive related SMS text alerts.

As always, the best ways to keep your horses healthy are to stay on top of vaccinations and practice good biosecurity.

Ground squirrels may look harmless, but their chewing can cause serious damage to your horse’s feet.
This mare came in with the wound shown here after squirrels chewed through her dorsal hoof wall, reaching dangerously close to the coronary band.

These injuries can lead to infection, hoof distortion, and long-term lameness if not treated promptly.

If you notice unexplained hoof wall defects, grooves, or irritation at the coronary band, contact us right away. Early care makes all the difference.

July Spotlight: Uterine Diagnostics for Subfertile Mares

As breeding season progresses, we continue to evaluate subfertile mares that have not yet conceived. Timely and accurate uterine diagnostics are critical to identifying the underlying causes of infertility.

Uterine culture and cytology remain two of the most valuable, minimally invasive tools in assessing uterine health prior to breeding. These procedures allow us to:
• Detect the presence of bacterial or fungal infections
• Evaluate inflammatory responses within the endometrium
• Identify subclinical endometritis that may not present with external signs
• Guide targeted treatment protocols to improve conception rates

If your mare is not in foal and you’re still planning to breed this season, now is the time to investigate further. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to successful outcomes.

Contact our team to schedule a complete uterine work-up.
