Whenever I post a puppy, I’m reminded how many people have fallen victim to scammers and ended up with a broken heart and a lighter bank account.
Please be careful when looking for a puppy on Facebook.
Scammers are everywhere right now, using stolen photos, fake reviews, “discount” puppies, and pressure tactics to get deposits fast.
A few red flags:
• Refusing video calls
• No proof they actually own the dog
• Multiple breeds always available
• Prices that seem too low
• Asking for payment through friends & family or gift cards
• Excuses for why you can’t visit or talk live
One important tip: a REAL BREEDER HAS A VETERINARIAN.
Ask for the clinic name and phone number, look it up yourself, and call directly. While a vet can’t share private details, they can often confirm whether the breeder is a client.
Here in Florida, and many other states, the breeder has to provide a vet signed health certificate. Ask to see it in advance assuming the puppies are already vet checked and ready to go. If the vet signed it, they should be willing to verify they saw the puppy.
Scammers hate being verified. Real breeders don’t.
A good breeder should welcome questions, show their dogs, discuss health testing, and build a relationship with you—not rush you into sending money.
Please do your homework before sending a deposit. A little caution can save a lot of heartbreak.
