If I could share this a million times, I would. Mojo Homestead FL Official has a great video on her TikTok explaining this!
It takes ALOT of time and work to get to SOP in any breed bird and dark egg color in marans and even olive eggers.

Genetics arenā€™t black and white, they throe curveballs and itā€™s something we as breeders are CONSTANTLY working towards.

Also, just because a breeder has show quality birds, does NOT mean every single chick that hatches from those birds will also be show quality or lay the darkest egg. In fact, you may only get a few great chicks out of several different hatches.
Itā€™s just the name of the game, and if anyone promises you SOP or dark egg colors, itā€™s a red flag šŸ«£

Tis the season of the broodies šŸ˜…

Meet the sister wives, Peanut and Dory. The bantam calico cochin has been sitting on eggs since Monday and the LF gold laced Cochin decided to join her a few days ago.

Cochins are great for brooding babies! The bantam isnā€™t even a year old yet and she is not playing about her eggs šŸ˜‚
Fingers crossed it goes well because Iā€™m all out of incubator space and Iā€™ve got BBS Ameraucanas under them!

I have a Hens choice dozen, plus a few extras, ready for a new incubator and four BCM and one olive egger chick, ready for their new brooder!
Chicks are straight run.
Hens choice dozens include BCM, BBS Ameraucanas, and olive egger eggs. There is no promise of how many of certian eggs youll get in each dozen. Its just whatever they hens give me šŸ˜Š

A little PSA for the new chicken tenders wanting different egg colors, specifically Black copper Marans .

Everyone loves that super rich, dark chocolate egg and while I understand that, they donā€™t stay super dark forever.

As the hens progress in their laying cycle, that egg color will fluctuate and even fade some. The genes for that dark egg are still there even though you may get slightly lighter eggs.

And speaking of genes, most breeders wont sell all their darkest eggs. Alot of us will hold them back for ourselves to hatch out and improve our lines.

And the most important part about genes, is that even though you got hatching eggs from a very reputable breeder with dark eggs or ā€œshow qualityā€ does not mean that every single egg that you hatch will be dark or every chick will not show quality. Thatā€™s just not how genetics work.
As breeders, we hatch out upwards of hundreds of chicks and maybe 5 to 10 might be ā€œshow qualityā€ .

So please, donā€™t expect the best of the best and donā€™t expect them to be the darkest eggs youā€™ve ever seen, because that takes YEARS of hard work to get to.

And as always, PLEASE always ask questions. There is no stupid question. We all started somewhere but ask breeders to see pictures of their stock and their eggs in different lighting, ask what the breeders goals are, ect.
