This week's plant haul is looking very attractive...

The tomatoes are popping off, AND we've got our first peppers this week!

We missed you last week at the Vancouver Farmers Market, but the good news is things are looking large and in charge. What's on your must-plant list?

Hey team, Hearth & Hollow won't be at the Vancouver Farmers Market this weekend. I injured my wrist and need some time to recover. Thanks for understanding, and let me know if you want some plants via porch pickup!

I wanted to share the public comment that I just sent in for the Clark County Council Hearing on the Preferred Alternative for the Comp Plan Update.

For additional information, Friends of Clark County has put together incredible resources on their site that I will link in the comments.

I've lived in Clark County since 2020, but I spent my summers coming up here since I was a kid. One of the reasons that we moved here was because of how wonderfully livable this area is and how close we are to some of the farms producing the best food in the Pacific Northwest.

The fact that I can drive 15 minutes and purchase a full diet CSA share is nothing short of remarkable.

Farmers in this region are already operating on razor-thin margins, facing rising input costs, labor shortages, and a land market that makes succession nearly impossible. When agricultural land gets absorbed into the urban growth boundary, it rarely comes back. Developers move faster than farmers can organize, and once that land is sold and subdivided, the infrastructure that supports a working farm — the soil, the drainage, the access roads, the neighboring operations — gets fragmented beyond repair. We're not just talking about open space. We're talking about the food system that makes this place worth living in.

There is no need, according to studies funded by the council, to expand the urban growth boundary. Doing so would be remarkably short-sighted, particularly in the face of the growing crisis around food costs, which will only continue to be exacerbated by the cost of fuel going up courtesy of the unnecessary war in Iran.

Frankly, it would also harken back to the last time the Council chose to vote against public interests and opinion. When the Clark County Council voted to approve the Chelatchie Bluff Surface Mining Overlay over widespread public opposition, the county was found in violation of state law, costing taxpayers an estimated $6–10 million in lost grants and loans before the council was ultimately forced to repeal it.

As someone who lives in the Ellsworth neighborhood, I'm excited about the direction of building up and filling in — developing the large, sprawling space the city already occupies rather than consuming the land around it. My husband and I are planning to add an ADU to our own backyard as soon as it makes financial sense.

The council must do the right thing and vote for Alternative 1.

We’ve got corn! And not just any corn - these are Indigenous varieties that are as beautiful as they are delicious and versatile.

All of the tomatoes are starting to come in, too, and honestly, I don’t care what anybody says about waiting until Mother’s Day. Mine are going in this week!

What are you most excited to see this week?

This week's Hearth & Hollow Dispatch is ready for you!

If you’ve been thinking about starting a garden this year but have no idea where to start…

If you tried planting seeds before and nothing sprouted…

If you’re tired of impulse-buying sad, diseased transplants at big-box stores and want to actually grow your own food…

I’d love to help.

I’m Dusti, and I run Hearth & Hollow, a backyard micro-nursery and plant CSA in Vancouver, WA, where I help families plan and plant edible gardens that fit their space, time, and budget, so they can grow food with confidence and a plan they can follow.

Next week I am running a 90-minute workshop for anyone who wants a thriving garden this year and a clear, workable plan that fits their space, schedule, and climate.

**On March 4 at 8:30-10:00am PST**, we’ll plan a garden that fits your space, time, and budget, and we’ll build a planting schedule working backwards from harvest so you know what to start, when to start it, and how to pace it.

You’ll learn how to figure out your growing zone and assess your space, sun, and constraints so you pick crops that make sense, map your layout and create a week-by-week planting calendar that accounts for succession planting and your actual schedule, and start seeds indoors with confidence while troubleshooting the most common problems like damping off, leggy seedlings, and pests.

**Live on Zoom + recording included.**

See you there!

- Dusti

P.S. And if you don’t have the time, space, or desire to start your own seeds, you can get your transplants directly from me at Hearth & Hollow.
