Happy veterinary technician week! Be sure to thank your veterinary technicians and support staff for all the hard work and care they provide your pets!

PSA - did you know since the pandemic, the veterinary medicine field has lost 30-50% of its providers, leaving an even heavier burden on those who remain.

On an average day, our techs:
- Prepare patients for surgery and postoperative recovery
- Administer anesthetic medications and monitor anesthetized patients
- Take dental radiographs, clean, and polish teeth
- Take full-body x-rays
- Assist with diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures
- Remember where "that new bump" is hiding
-Draw blood and perform laboratory tests
- Place intravenous catheters
- Calm and comfort worried nerves of owners and their pets
- Prepare and administer medications
-Clean eye boogers, nail trims, a**l gland expressions, and clean the poo
- Obtain and record patient information
- Wound care, mat shaves, bandage changes,
- Know if your pet prefers cheese or peanut butter
- Educate owners about animal behavior
- Maintain hospital inventories of medications and supplies
- Administer vaccinations, cytopoint injections, and subcutaneous fluids

Show your appreciation
Technicians deal with upset owners, aggressive and uncooperative animals, euthanasias, and seeing severe and traumatic injuries. Stress is one of the biggest factors cited by techs who decide to leave the profession.

A "thank you" can come in many forms:
- Simply say "Thank you"
- Email your thoughts of gratitude
- Sponsor a meal
- Coffee
- Suprise them with snacks
- Send a greeting card

We love our staff and appreciate the hard physical and emotional work they put in every day ❤️💥🐾😺🐶🦎🐦🐰

We are very excited to welcome our first of two new Doctors to our team! Dr. Wenzel!

Mark Wenzel, DVM, grew up in Napa Valley, California, as the middle child of 11 siblings. His passion for animals, evident from a young age, guided his academic and professional journey. Dr. Wenzel earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Chemistry and Biology, along with a minor in Mathematics, from James Madison University in 2016. He went on to graduate from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2020.

With four years of veterinary practice in Oregon, Dr. Wenzel has a strong passion for surgery, internal medicine, and dermatology. He is committed to practicing gold-standard medicine, emphasizing preventative care to enhance patient outcomes. Dr. Wenzel has a particular interest in managing osteoarthritis in canine patients and preventing kidney disease in feline patients.

Outside of his veterinary practice, Dr. Wenzel enjoys an active lifestyle. He is an avid skier and served as a ski instructor at Mt. Hood in 2024, finding the experience deeply rewarding. In his free time, he also enjoys hiking, rollerblading, and playing frisbee with his border collie, Sassy. Recently relocated to the Vancouver area, Dr. Wenzel is excited to join the Vancouver Veterinary Hospital team and contribute to the community’s pet care needs.
