If you’ve ever tried to brush your pet’s teeth or look in their mouth, you may already know the answer to this question. Safety and cooperation!

Examining an animal’s mouth can be difficult when they are conscious, let alone making a thorough assessment of gum and tooth health. For the safety and benefit of both the veterinarian and the pet, a full general anaesthetic is generally required for dental procedures.

This allows your veterinarian the time to assess the health of each tooth, and ensure they are examined, cleaned and polished thoroughly. Studies have also shown that up to 50% of dental abnormalities can be missed on visual examination alone. Therefore X-rays of your pet’s mouth and teeth may be required while they are anesthetised to see issues that hide beneath the gum line, like tooth pulp necrosis.
