Why do we care about thiols?

Because we care about the well-being of dogs and cats and other animals. Studies with OraStrip show that thiol levels in oral fluid increase as patients get sicker with more periodontal disease. But it’s not just us – and not just cats and dogs.

In a peer-reviewed study (Puzio et al. 2019), as dairy cows suffered from greater oxidative stress, their plasma thiol levels went down, and their saliva thiol levels went up – a clear inverse correlation. As you know, total antioxidant capacity in plasma is critically important to health, and significant decreases are closely associated with serious disease. The level of thiols in oral fluid is a convenient wellness check that can shed light on systemic pathophysiology.

Caribou (an 8 week old Presa Canario) has quickly made herself at home with her playful spirit and affectionate nature. She enjoys spending time with children, playing with her canine companions, visiting the boat dock, and chasing sticks under the sun.

True to her friendly personality, Caribou is incredibly social and greets everyone as if they’re an old friend. She shares her home with a lively and diverse group of pets, including a cattle dog, a coonhound, two beagles, an African Grey parrot, and a cat.

We’re thrilled to have her join the crew—something tells us she’s going to keep things very lively around here. We are looking forward to many joyful moments ahead as she grows with us. Welcome to the family, Caribou! 🐾🌞🐕
