A Canine Understanding

A Canine Understanding We provide obedience training, behavioral modification, board & train, and full grooming services I offer low to no stress grooming with a fear free approach.

Hi, I'm Mindy, and I am a dog trainer and behavior specialist and groomer. I specialize in behavioral modification, obedience and puppy socialization and development. I started A Canine Understanding with the goal to help the dogs and owners that no one else could or wanted to! Since I began training in 2005 I have helped 100's of owners and dogs as well as rescue dogs step out of the shadows of b

ehavioral issues that kept them from reaching their true potential! I have also helped countless owners lay vidal ground work with their puppies to help ensure they grow to be well adjusted and well mannered adults. In addition to training clients, I worked 10 years as an Animal Control Officer in order to further my positive impact within community and the lives of dogs and their owners. Throughout my time with animal control, I conducted behavioral evaluations on shelter dogs, and continued to expand my knowledge, and understanding of dog behavior, training techniques, and pack structure. I believe that through expert behavioral coaching, training and applying calm confident leadership you can build a strong reliable and trusting relationship with your dog. I strive to teach owners how their own behaviors influence their dogs, how to read and understand their dogs way of communicating, and how to build a mutually rewarding relationship through boundaries, structure, leadership and trust. I groom one dog at a time, and ensure proper time is taken to make it a positive experience for your dog. Additionally, I offer behavioral grooms in which the dogs are trained and conditioned during each groom to teach them how to accept grooming ending the trauma that can take place if they are rushed through the process.

I had the pleasure of working with Ms. Opal this morning! 🐾

Opal had developed some challenging car habits, including demand barking for attention. While it may seem harmless, this behavior can make car rides stressful for both dogs and their owners and, more importantly, create a safety hazard by distracting the driver.

Today she made wonderful progress! She's learning that the car is a place to settle, relax, and lie down quietly. I'm so proud of how well she did, and I can't wait to see her confidence continue to grow with practice. Great job, Ms. Opal! ā¤ļø

It's been crazy busy, so I have gotten a little behind in posting updates. However, I just had to share this cutie with everyone! Meet 9 month old West Highland White Terrier Mazie! Her parents just enrolled her in our Board & Train program. She will be coming to stay 3 weeks with us to build her understanding of basic obedience commands along with learning impulse control, and how to use a treadmill. We are so excited to get the opportunity to work with this little nugget! 🄰

It has been a couple of weeks since Molly the mini Dachshund went home after her 3-week board & train—and she’s doing amazing!

Her owner emailed me yesterday saying, ā€œWe took Mollie down to the farmers market in Vancouver and she did so well! She navigated the crowds deftly—and it was crowded!ā€

They also shared, ā€œWe went and ate at Twigs on the waterfront and Mollie was a dream—sitting under my chair for the entire meal. We are beaming.ā€

Tonight, I met up with them for a check-in, and I couldn’t be prouder. Molly has gained so much confidence, understands what’s expected of her, and—most importantly—has the tools to succeed. Her parents are growing right alongside her, building the confidence and leadership that makes all the difference.

This is what it’s all about—real-life success, out in the world.

If you’re ready to help your dog feel more confident, calm, and reliable in everyday situations, I’d love to help. Send me a message or reach out to learn more about my board & train programs 🐾

One of the things I think about a lot in this work is how dogs experience what we ask of them.

Grooming, training, handling—it’s easy for us to see it as routine. But for a dog, it can feel confusing, intense, or even overwhelming, especially when they don’t understand what’s happening or why.

I’ve worked with enough dogs to know they all come in as individuals. Some are confident and curious. Others are cautious, unsure, or already carrying past experiences we may never fully know about. And I feel strongly that all of those dogs deserve the same thing: patience, clarity, and gentleness.

Dogs don’t enter our world with the ability to understand our expectations. They’re placed into a human environment and asked to navigate things that don’t make instinctive sense—being handled, restrained, exposed to tools and sounds, and asked to ā€œjust be okay with it.ā€

That’s where I think our responsibility really comes in.

My background in behavior has shaped everything about how I approach this. I pay close attention to body language, stress signals, and thresholds—not just compliance. Because I’m not just interested in getting through a groom or a training session. I’m interested in how the dog feels while it’s happening.

Trust changes everything. When a dog feels safe and understood, they don’t just tolerate things—they start to relax into them. And that’s where real progress begins.

At the end of the day, I don’t measure success by how ā€œperfectā€ a dog looks or performs in a moment. I measure it by whether they felt safe in the process and whether or not trust was formed.

That's the part that should always matter most!

Lucy and I were back at Silvie the Miniature Schnauzer’s home for her third training session—and the progress has been incredible!

When we first started, Silvie would rush guests barking, muzzle punch them, and her behavior presented a real bite risk. This was all driven by over-arousal—getting far beyond her threshold—and anxiety around not knowing what to expect.

Silvie is learning that visitors don’t need to trigger a five-alarm alert. With each session, she’s gaining more confidence and settling more quickly.

The real win came the very next day when her family had a guest over. Silvie needed a little time to adjust, but within about 20 minutes she was calm and comfortable. She was able to relax in her bed, spend some quiet time with her people, and even settle in her kennel with minimal fuss—huge progress for her!

Mom said it best: ā€œShe did very well for the first time with someone other than you.ā€ šŸ™Œ

This is what consistent, positive reinforcement training looks like—building confidence, creating calm, and helping dogs feel safe in their world.

✨ If your dog struggles with guests, anxiety, or overexcitement, I’d love to help. Reach out to get started!
