Reptiles are incredibly good at hiding signs of illness. Unlike lots of other pets, they often wonât show obvious symptoms until a problem has already progressed. Because they are cold blooded, their immune systems are different than a warm blooded animal. Sometimes meaning it takes months and months to fight off illnesses that seem simple.
This is why paying attention to small changes matters. A reptile acting differently, refusing food, becoming less active, having changes in breathing, shedding issues, unusual behavior, or anything that just seems âoffâ should never be ignored.
Regular checkups with an experienced vet can help catch problems early. Waiting until a reptile is visibly very sick can make treatment much harder, and sometimes by then they are already struggling. Our reptiles rely completely on us to notice the little things and provide the care they need. Reptiles may be quiet about their problems, but they still need the same level of care and attention as any other pet!
