🤓 HEARTLAND ACADEMY❗️ 🐢 Our GREEN SWAMP is actually the headwaters for 4 major river systems in Florida -- the Ocklawaha, Withlacoochee, Hillsborough, and Peace Rivers. 🌱 The 141-mile long Withlacoochee River ORIGINATES in central Florida’s GREEN SWAMP, just east of Polk City. 🐛 It flows west, then north, and then turns northwest and finally west again before it empties into the Gulf of Mexico in Yankeetown. 🐍

🐸 The Withlacoochee -- meaning DEEP AND DARK -- is one of the very few Rivers in the WORLD that flows SOUTH to NORTH. 🌎 It has the highest Florida aquifer levels, which is the main source of our very valuable DRINKING WATER in the state. 💦

🦖 SWFWMD'S chief engineer, Dr. Mark Fulkerson, says the Green Swamp is CRUCIAL to how the land and water interact, especially during periods of heavy rain. 🦎 “The GREEN SWAMP helps store floodwaters, and then releases them slowly. 🦚 Its natural state also helps CLEAN water that flows to those river systems and to the aquafer, so it helps FILTER the water and IMPROVE the water quality,” he explained. 🍃
