Saturday is Valentine’s Day, but it’s also World Bonobo Day, and there are many reasons to love bonobos!

🦍 Bonobos (along with chimpanzees) share 98.7% of their DNA with humans, making them our closest living relative.

🦍 They are only found in forests south of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

🦍 Like humans, bonobos maintain relationships and settle conflicts. Bonobo groups tend to be peaceful and led by females.

💦 🐸 Romeo, once known as the world's loneliest frog, has died, but the attention that Romeo brought to Critically Endangered Sehuencas Water Frogs continues to offer renewed hope for the species.

When Romeo was brought into a conservation breeding program in Bolivia in 2009, he was the only known member of his species. His story touched people around the world and mobilized a search effort that found five other Sehuencas Water Frogs in 2018. Most recently, herpetologists have unexpectedly found a new population of Sehuencas Water Frogs in Carrasco National Park in Bolivia!

The small population is only the second found in the wild since 2009 and the frogs are successfully breeding — making this discovery vital to protecting this species. Sehuencas Water Frogs are threatened by habitat destruction as the result of agricultural expansion, in addition to climate change, disease, pollution and the introduction of invasive exotic species to their streams.

Today in our Perfect Match series: The Spa Date 🐢🐠

Every relationship needs a little pamper time! In places like Hawai’i, green sea turtles (honu) visit cleaning stations for a full-body exfoliation. Turtles rest on the reef, while fish like tangs and wrasses nibble algae and parasites from their shells and skin. The turtles get a clean, drag-free shell for swimming, and the fish get a feast!

New Pups Need Our Help!

Over 70 pups from a rural Georgia puppy mill need help! Outside, with snow, these pups needed rescue! Thankfully a group in Georgia was able to save them and reached out to one of our partner rescues for help with placement and they contacted us. Over 30 of them are arriving to the Orlando area Monday, February 9th, and we will be receiving 11 of them. Upon arrival they will be headed straight to our vet to get checked in and prepped for full vetting - vaccines, heartworm tests, microchips, spay/neuter, dental cleanings - and anything else they need. This is a large intake and we can really use some help with the veterinary expenses - you can use the button here on this post or any of the links on our website, www.floridalittledogrescue.com, if you are able to lend a helping paw, the pups (and their human helpers) would really appreciate it!!
