I have a crazy, hilarious story for you about why I will never underestimate the power of warmth and humidity again.
โIt started when I took about 20 blue bottle fly casters and put them in their usual hatching container. After a whole month, absolutely nothing happened. Frustrated, I started a second container with another 20 casters. Fast forward 15 days, and only six flies had hatchedโjust enough to feed my jumping spiders, but the rest of the batch was a total bust.
โOut of patience, I tossed both containers into the big trash can in our sunroom, along with the leftover refrigerated casters from that same batch.
โA couple of days later, I noticed a few flies buzzing around the kitchen. I didn't think much of it and just swatted them. But while I was at work, my husband called me.
โ"Honey, we have a serious fly problem," he said. "Iโve already killed about ten. Where are they coming from?" I told him I had no clue, but that Iโd killed a few earlier, too.
โThe real comedy began when I got home. I opened the sunroom door and accidentally unleashed a massive cloud of over 100 flies straight into the main house! It turns out the sunroom's heat and humidity created the absolute perfect incubation chamber for every single caster I had thrown away.
โI immediately went into rescue-and-destroy mode, managing to live-catch 34 of them to put in my butterfly enclosure for the jumpers. The rest? Letโs just say it was an absolute chaotic mess trying to clear them all out.
โI can finally laugh about it now, but in the moment, I was losing my mind. Lesson learned: never throw casters in the sunroom trash again!
