Why temperament beats papers every time – especially with Highlands
This is the moment I knew she was a keeper.
10 years breeding Highlands and I’ve learned one hard truth: you can’t breed the wild out of a calf after 6 months. It’s in the first 30 days. Daily handling, quiet voices, letting them choose to come to you.
She’s not registered. No fancy pedigree. What she is: halter trained at 12 weeks, leads on a loose rope, stands for kids to brush, and will walk up for a scratch instead of running the fence.
That’s what most families actually want. Not a show ribbon. A paddock mate that won’t knock your toddler over.
We breed for three things at Heritage Herds:
1. Calm first contact – if they spook at a bucket, they don’t stay
2. Daily handling from birth – not just at weaning
3. Matching the right calf to the right home – pet homes get the softest ones
Unregistered lets us focus on that, and keep them affordable for hobby farms.
If you’re looking for a Highland for temperament, not paperwork, message me . I’ll send you current availability and videos of how they handle.
