This is the HEART of the sport.

Doing the small things right (cleaning tack, doing exercises with your horse, practicing hard things again and again) is what makes a true equestrian...NOT fancy tack, NOT the most expensive horse, NOT being rich.

Put the phone away, put other things out of your mind, and give whatever horse you're working with the best version of yourself that you can every single day. No excuses.

"I’ve always said that riding is like tennis (or, these days, pickleball). It’s a lifetime sport. You can enjoy riding at almost any age, and there are many levels of participation. Things don’t get tricky until you want to compete. And then they get really tricky when you want to compete—and succeed—at a high level. Here are some thoughts on success in horse sports.

If you’ve been in this sport for any length of time, you already know this. If you’re just starting out… well, welcome aboard the struggle bus.

However, there is a path to success. You may think that path involves talent, and while talent surely doesn’t hurt, it’s not always the main ingredient for success in horse sport. If you’re not the most talented rider out there, there are other things you can do that will help vault you to the top.

At least 50% of the people (okay, 99%) reading this right now are thinking the same thing—money. And they’re not wrong. I’m a realist, and have been playing in this sandbox long enough to understand that money plays a significant role in horse sport. Frankly, access to some fairly deep pockets is essential. A competitive horse is expensive. Top coaching and training are expensive. Upper-level horse shows are expensive.

But there are some things that money can’t buy. And those things can get you closer to the top, regardless of how rich or talented you might be. Here’s my top 3.

Time

Success in this sport requires a great deal of time. This includes time in the tack as well as time at the barn. That sounds easy enough, right? I wish.

I’ve spoken to so many parents over the years who wonder why Suzie isn’t doing better…doing more…winning more. Unfortunately, Suzie takes one or two lessons a week, misses a lot for school activities, social activities, “tired”, or a million other reasons, and cannot find time to come to the barn to ride her horse much outside of her scheduled lesson rides. She is very busy and just doesn’t have the time.

To really succeed in this sport, you have to know your horse. You must know his canter in all its facets. And for that to happen, you need to make a serious time commitment to the barn and to your horse. You need to take lessons at least twice weekly (preferably with one of them a flat lesson), and ride on your own several other times.

If you are not putting the time in with your horse at home, it’s hard to be the winner at shows.

Anyone can enjoy this sport at a lower level without spending a lot of time at it, but to succeed at a higher level, time riding and at the barn is essential.

Effort

Here’s another one that sounds easy. But, like time, effort is sometimes rare.

I’ve known kids who come to the barn a lot. They show up with friends, spend an hour or so chatting and having fun, finally get their horse ready, and ride for 15 or 20 minutes between standing center ring and gabbing. I like fun, I like chatting, and I like gabbing. It’s important, and it definitely belongs in a barn. I’d just like to see that same effort expended on actually riding.

We spend a lot of time on tracking exercises in lessons, and I know other trainers do as well. The foundation for a winning hunter ride is track and pace. And yet many students don’t practice difficult tracks when they hack on their own. It’s all w/t/c on the rail, and an occasional circle. Your horse doesn’t need to work hard every ride, but he does need to concentrate occasionally. It’s a skill that requires effort.

What does effort look like? It looks like practicing difficult tracks, it looks like varying your canter pace, it looks like riding on your own without stirrups, it looks like cantering in a half seat for a hot minute, it looks like varying your posting rhythm, and challenging yourself with some hard ones. It looks like framing, and bending, and flexing, and stretching. And once your ride is over, it looks like taking good care of your horse with a proper cool-down, maybe ice boots or some liniment, maybe a nice bath, maybe a hand-graze. It’s certainly not just throwing him back in his stall after a cursory brushing.

Anyone can enjoy this sport at a lower level without making a huge effort, but to succeed at a higher level, effort is essential.

Commitment

This one is a little more elusive than the first two. Basically, it’s sticking to something when it gets hard. “I asked him to do that, and he didn’t.”

“He won’t listen.”

“I did everything right, and we still didn’t win.”

My answer? Try it again. And possibly again. And possibly 100 times after that, without getting angry or frustrated or taking it out on your horse. Read the first sentence of this article again. Success in this sport is hard. There will be frustrating moments. There will be many fails. You can do everything right and still not win. And yet, do it again. Try harder. Keep your cool. Assess. Evaluate. Tweak. Listen. Change. Learn. Grow.

Anyone can enjoy this sport at a lower level without making an enormous commitment, but to succeed at a higher level, commitment is essential.

If you can put in the time, give the effort, and make the commitment, you might be surprised how far you can get."

⚔️👸 Chunky warrior princess pony ISO best friend! 💙🐎

🎥 VIDEO IN COMMENTS 👇

The facts: Midnight Storm, a.k.a. Stormy, is a 6yo 13.2h (sticked) grade Morgan pony mare whose theme song should be Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot. As the kids say, she is THICC. Also, check out her epic forelock! In addition to her excellent chonk factor, Stormy has several amazing traits that her future bestie will appreciate. 🔥

🏆 The great: Stormy walks, trots, canters, and jumps cross rails, and she has jumped single fences to 2'. She is the perfect horse to get someone going in the local shows. Trails are 100% her jam, and she has incredibly smooth gaits. Want to practice your sitting trot? Piece of cake. Need to up your equitation game? Stormy is uncomplicated, and that means riders can really refine their position and technique. Stormy has been camping at Montaña de Oro State Park, and she was totally unfazed by everything. She has been to gymkhanas, and she has dreams of trying all sorts of different things with her future best friend/platonic soul mate. Her trailering skills are top notch, she is barefoot and utterly perfect for the farrier, and she is up to date on everything. She adores being groomed and wants you to use the curry comb on her special spots for hours. Maybe even days. She deserves it, ok? I mean, she IS the barn favorite.

👀 The key details: I did say she is a warrior princess, right? Stormy is definitely the alpha in any group when there's food around. She is popular with the boys, but doesn't take any of their funny business. Stormy has to eat grass hay only, since Morgans are notorious for developing metabolic syndrome and we don't want her natural thicc-ness becoming an issue. She also eats Hygain Zero (no sugar/no starch) for the same reason.

💁 What Stormy is not: Stormy thinks fancy A-show model classes are for other ponies. She's not here to win a beauty contest...she is here to show you how big b***y girls run the world. She does not have auto lead changes, but she is starting to figure her changes out. If you or your trainer can help her keep learning them, great. If not, no big deal. While Stormy is a kick ride when in regular work (4-6 days per week), she is also not a machine. She will give scary things a good solid side-eye, but her main response is to stop and stare. Remember, the warrior princess must size up potential threats to see if she can take them. The answer is that yes, she can always take them after she stares them down (and when she knows her person is there with her). 💪

Stormy is also NOT for sale. She is available for LEASE to a person with a trainer and/or references. On-site lease with optional lessons from USHJA credentialed trainer in Valley Center, CA available.

Price and lease length negotiable. Stormy is only available to homes in Southern California.

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Makenna and her family on their purchase of Souter! 🎉🥳🐎
We were trusted with training Souter and finding the right home for him, and we couldn't be happier with this match. The sky is the limit for this pair, and it's just the best when things click this way. We appreciate the opportunity to play equine matchmaker, and we're just overjoyed when we see the connection happen.

What a fantastic show we had at The Paddock Riding Club last weekend! Team Phoenix pulled together and took 2 horses to their first show ever. Our show veteran Nite (as always) was brilliant with his young rider Hayden, and the two earned a 4th and a 1st in the 0.70m classes. Hayden's rides were both excellent, and the class she took first in was ridden perfectly. Huge congratulations to them! Hayden's hard work is paying off, and we're excited to see them compete at Nationals in Las Vegas in November.

Hayden also had the honor of showing our sweet pony mare Jazz in her first ever show. Hayden rode two lovely rounds (hunter and equitation crossrails), and Jazz showed she's a true competitor. Jazz is from the same herd as Nite (Oak Creek Wild Horses), and shows the same enthusiasm for jumping as he does in a package pretty enough for the local hunters. She'll be looking for a new address and a special home to call her own very soon. Inquire for details.

Souter is an imported off-track Thoroughbred in our sale program. He is progressing steadily and is jumping crossrails at the canter. He was very good at the show, with only a small bout of nerves that he easily worked out of. He didn't compete at this show, and we were thrilled to see that he was able to mind his manners 98% of the time. That other 2% will come along shortly...with Thoroughbreds, teaching them to self-regulate in stressful environments (like shows) is key. If I was in the market for a new OTTB for myself, this is the one I'd want! He'll be available soon, so send any questions our way.

Such a fantastic experience for all, and we appreciate everyone pitching in to make this a great experience for Hayden, Nite, Jazz, and Souter. As always, thanks to EquineClicks Photography, Inc. for the excellent photos and to K/A Productions for the lovely show. Thanks also to our sponsors Contact Saddles and Albion Saddlemakers Co. Ltd for their support, and we can't wait for Nite's new custom saddle to arrive!
