🐶🐱 Diabetes Awareness for Our Furry Friends! 💙
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month! Did you know that thousands of dogs and cats are diagnosed with diabetes every year? Knowing the signs and understanding the condition is vital for giving our pets long, happy lives!
What is Diabetes? 🤔
Like in humans, pet diabetes occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or can’t use the insulin it produces effectively. This leads to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia).
• Most common in: Older pets, overweight pets, and certain breeds.
Key Symptoms to Watch For! 👀
Catching it early makes a huge difference! Look out for these common signs:
1. Increased Thirst : Your pet is constantly asking for water.
2. Increased Urination: More frequent and larger accidents in the house or litter box.
3. Weight Loss: Despite having a normal or even increased appetite.
4. Increased Appetite: They seem hungrier than usual.
5. Lethargy: Low energy or unusual tiredness.
What Can You Do? ✅
• Know the Risk: If your pet is overweight, talk to your vet about a healthy weight management plan now.
• Regular Check-ups: Routine veterinary exams are key for early detection.
• If Diagnosed: Diabetes is manageable! It typically involves a carefully controlled diet, consistent exercise, and insulin injections administered by you (with training from your vet, of course!).
