Hey everybody! Over the last week I’ve had 15-20 customers reach out regarding the updates of there deer mount that was taken this past fall.
The comment I get most often is “What is the status of my mount in the process?” I wanted to answer this question and hopefully clear up a major misunderstanding of taxidermy that I see especially in new customers.
That misunderstanding is that there is an ongoing meticulous multimonth process in mounting each individual deer. This is actually far from reality. And 95% of the work being done on your deer wil be done all within a 3 week timeframe. The rest of ther time is just waiting.
- I wait on the tannery to get your hide
- You wait on me to get to your deer in the line
- I wait on the mount to dry
- You wait on me to call
- And I wait on you to pick it up.
To put the “process” and “timeframe” easy to understand terms that may save you a phone call or text of “just checking in” I have put a description below.
Pic 1 - Day 1
- You shoot your deer
Pic 2 - Day 1
- Deer is dropped off for mounting
Pic 3 - Day 1
- Deer is skinned out, bagged and frozen
Pic 4 - Day 2 until usually around 3 months
- Deer cape sits in the freezer
- Deer rack sits on the wall
(We wait for the tannery to call for drop off)
Pic 5- Appox 3 months
- Capes are taken in bulk to the tannery
Pic 6 - Months 3-7ish
- Capes are in line to be tanned.
- I watch grass grow, paint dry, and turkey hunt.
Pic 7- Month 7ish
- Capes are tanned, picked up, and sorted
Pic 8 - Months 7-9ish
- Your cape sits in thee freezer waiting its turn while I mount other deer.
Pic 9 - In 2-4 total hours
- Your deer is prepped, mounted, and hung to dry
Pic 10 - 3 weeks
- Your deer “dries” on the wall.
- I wait… you wait.
Pic 11 - 1 hour
- Your deer is cleaned, brushed, puttied, and painted.
Pic 12 - 1 Minute
- Deer Is moved to show room… completed.
- You are called for pick up.
I hope this helps to see that “just checking in” and “seeing where in the process” a deer is really isn’t necessary because the process can’t be rushed even if I wanted to because I too am waiting. Good taxidermy requires time and patience. A rushed mount is a poor mount and I would rather lose you as a customer for being “slow” than keep you as a customer for turning out a poor quality mount with fast turnaround.
Anyway… Happy Sunday and I hope this helped.
