I’ll be the first to say it — I’m not a big fan of “lessons.” Not because I don’t believe kids should learn, but because too many people treat lessons like babysitting with a saddle. It takes a lot for me to take a kid under my wing, because if I’m going to invest my time, knowledge, and heart into them, I need to see want to, discipline, and drive. And that has nothing to do with age — I’ve seen seven-year-olds with more grit than some adults.
I’m tough on kids, and I don’t sugarcoat it. If something isn’t right, I’ll tell you it isn’t right. I refuse to let a kid fall into what I call “lesson purgatory,” where they’re told they’re doing amazing every time and never actually improve. If I say, “You look great,” I want that to mean something. It should carry weight because they’ve earned it through hard work, mistakes, and growth.
I’ve been fired before for being “too harsh,” and I’m perfectly fine with that. Because the ones who stick it out — the ones who push through the hard days, take the tough feedback, and keep showing up — those are the ones who end up winning. I’m not in this to pad my bank account or fill a lesson book. I’m in this because I want to build the next generation of horsemen and horsewomen. I want to see these girls chase their dreams, step into the arena with confidence, and rise to their full potential. And if that means being tough, brutally honest, and demanding along the way — then so be it. Because at the end of the day, easy doesn’t build champions.

Huge congratulations to my lesson kid Adaline Crump on qualifying for her first rodeo finals at just 9 years old! 🎉🐴
If you’ve been around me, you know I don’t hand out compliments easily — but this one is earned. Adaline has put in the work, shown up with discipline, drive, and a real want to every single time she steps into the arena. She’s taken the tough feedback, pushed through the hard days, and never let anything stop her from chasing big goals.
Watching her hard work pay off and seeing her name on that finals roster is what it’s all about for me. This is just the beginning for her — the fire, grit, and heart she’s shown already tell me she’s got a bright future in this sport. 💪🔥
Proud doesn’t even begin to cover it. Congratulations, Adaline — let’s go make some noise at the finals!
Amy Katherine Crump you deserve to be recognized too, for being a kick ass mom and hauling your kid around all summer, never giving up. 🖤
