Never seen the eggplants grow so high in the tunnel. Dancer is a very good variety. I think they will hit 8 feet before season's end. Nine with some more fish emulsion thru the drip line.

This has been the situation for a long time so it is good for the NY Times to take notice. I think that it is better to just go to the store than to join a "CSA" that really is not local, or sources from multiple big farms and is not based on one family farm, or is investor not farmer owned, or as in the case of Relay Foods and others is all of the above.

As demand for local and organic produce has ballooned in the last five years, so have other ideas for connecting farmers to customers.

Hello everyone. CSA pickup this spring and summer will be at the backyard of CSA members Tara and Chiraag Ramchandani. Tara and Chiraag live at 522 6th Street SE and their backyard is in the same alley as the Christ Church parking lot.

We are looking to start the CSA the second or third week of May depending when enough crops are ready. Monday has always been the pickup day for the CSA but we can change that if more people prefer another day. If you plan to join the CSA this year, send us an email with your preference at [email protected]

The CSA season will be 18 weeks and cost $612, the same per week cost as 2014. Shares can be held with a $200 deposit and paid in any sort of installments. Checks can be sent to Jug Bay Market Garden at 10508 Croom RD, Upper Marlboro MD. 20772

Here is our letter to the county executive in support of funding for the county ag marketing specialist. You can reach County Exec. Baker at [email protected]

To: County Executive Baker and the Prince George’s County Council
From: Scott Hertzberg, Jugbay Market Garden
Subject: Need to Continue Funding for a County Agriculture Marketing Specialist
February 4, 2016

We have operated a vegetable and flower farm on Croom Road in Upper Marlboro since 2001. We are concerned to hear that the M-NCPPC has decided it cannot continue to fund the Agriculture Marketing Specialist for Prince George's County beyond 2016. Kim Rush Lynch has been very helpful to us since she took over the position from Janna Howley, who also was a big supporter of our farm and other Prince George's County farm. Kim's weekly newsletters keep us in the loop about workshops and new resources. She is always quick to reply to my questions about new marketing opportunities. Just this week Kim connected us with the buyer at the Greenbelt Food Coop. She also connected us with people within extension who may help us figure out how to work out a complicated farmland lease. She has offered to help us with this as well.

Janna Howley helped us write an application for a $15,000 grant we received from the USDA's SARE program to build a vegetable dryer. We most likely would not have received the grant without her writing the application and adding a letter of support.

Local produce is now very popular. It may seem that farmers do not need much help selling their produce. The opposite is the case. The market has become very competitive with the rise in popularity. Very well financed operations have moved into the business taking up large market share. Smaller and mid-sized growers need assistance with marketing more than ever before. Operations like ours need help from the Ag Marketing Specialist to compete with the few large operations that, with large investor money, hire their own full-time marketing specialists. It is important to note most of these type of well-financed farms are from outside Prince George's County. The majority of us have to spend most our time farming and cannot afford marketing specialists. That is why having a passionate marketing specialist like Kim Rush Lynch is necessary to the vitality of the county's farm economy.

Sincerely, Scott Hertzberg
