Did you know that mourning doves breed year round? They are one of the only small birds that we have read all the time. In case you find a baby bird, we've enclosed our baby bird brochure. The two birds we got tonight were from urgent care out here in Brandon. They told us they were at her mother was killed by a cat. They came with no paperwork but we were really thankful they dropped them off! .

We are pleased to start the day with positive developments. The alligator rescued several weeks ago, affectionately known as Jasper, currently at Swamp girl adventures, has been relocated to a more spacious enclosure featuring a deeper pool. As Jasper has convalesced he has become increasingly feisty, Kim described him as a firecracker! He attempted to snap at Kim and Chuck during the transfer. Meanwhile, Sonya and Madison arrived to care for the cockatiel. We received six new baby squirrels yesterday, which are undeniably adorable, although they become feisty biters as they mature! They are wild animals that belong in the trees. And that's what we raise them up to be. The majority of our squirrels are transferred to our rehab partners. Because we focus on Birds Of Prey and we have seven ambassadors this is not a place that a squirrel is comfortable. They should never think a bird of prey is safe to be around ever. After all, we are the raptor center of Tampa Bay!

This morning, en route to Brandon, Kim Rexroat responded to a call at the water treatment plant to assist in rescuing a great blue heron from a precarious situation. With the aid of the caller, their colleague, and a skimmer net, she demonstrated the rescue procedure, and the bird was successfully extracted and flew away without issue. This empowers the plant's staff to handle similar situations promptly in the future. Prior to her arrival, we received a report of a yearling Red-Tailed hawk found on Busch Boulevard. We appreciate Blue Pearl's assistance in providing x-ray services, which revealed the bird had been shot. The prognosis is uncertain, and given the bird's thin condition, the shooting likely occurred a couple of days ago.

Update: Transport found. This juvenile raccoon was found next to its mom who was deceased yesterday. Some good Samaritans rescued it and we were fortunate that Maria was able to pick it up and provide transport last night. It ate well overnight and is ready to be transferred to the Wildlife Center Of Southwest Florida. Thanks to Denise, this baby has a ride!

We had an unusual call yesterday from Hillsborough County Animal Control, as a baby opossum had been surrendered to their shelter. Denise was able to retrieve it before closing time, which was great. We rarely receive calls from animal control since they don't typically accept wildlife. However, Kimi, a former Humane Society employee now working at the shelter, knew to contact us. .

Baby squirrels continued to arrive today, with a tiny pinky and two juveniles received. Four squirrels, including two from today and two from yesterday, were transferred to Beth's facility, with Kat Westfall facilitating the transport. A juvenile little blue heron, showing signs of improvement, was among those transferred. A good Samaritan rescued a juvenile raccoon found next to its deceased mother, and Maria brought it to the center. The male raccoon has a distinctive brown coat.

I would like to introduce you to some of our rescue partners who have been instrumental in helping us care for raccoons this year. Little Bit Rescue in Mt. Dora, led by Elizabeth has taken in our more critical cases, leveraging Elizabeth's extensive experience with raccoons. Vanessa in Lakeland has collaborated closely with Elizabeth, although remains autonomous because of the state's rule prohibiting multiple permitted rehabbers from working at the same facility. Pam at the Wildlife Center Of Southwest Florida in Venice has also been a valuable partner, taking in not only our raccoons but also other injured animals. Together, we make a significant difference in wildlife rehabilitation in central Florida. . .

The Raptor Center had a busy day, as is typical. A veterinary office in Apollo Beach had three baby squirrels that couldn't be reunited with their mother due to unknown origins. Suzy facilitated their transfer to Tampa Bay Raptor Rescue. Later, a juvenile Little Blue Heron was reported in Mulberry, and Sonya, Jimmy, and Madison successfully rescued it, despite the bird fleeing into the woods. The heron will be transferred to Beth Weir tomorrow. Additionally, a juvenile squirrel injured by a cat or hawk, a juvenile opossum with metabolic bone disease, and a Red-shouldered Hawk with a suspected fractured leg were received. Sara and Selena rescued the opossum and hawk. And we ended the day with 3 more baby squirrels. These had been injured, evidently from the fall from the tree when the next gave way, most likely in the storm. We lost two of them and one is alive this morning.

We are building the Center in Riverview, FL. Come join us!

We have been rescuing birds in the Tampa Bay area for many, many years. After driving countless miles to get birds to rehab centers around the state we know the need exists for a local Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in this area focused on birds of prey. That is what we are in the process of creating in Riverview FL. Birds of prey that make this area their home, or pass through here on migration, will now be able to get help locally when they need it and easily return to the wild back in their own home territory.
