Once a month on a Friday, Dolphin Research Center will highlight one of our Field Research dolphins and share a little about them!
In the field, our researchers observe wild dolphins in the Middle Keys to better understand their behavior beyond the interactions and observations we have with our own animal family. This includes gathering data on their distribution, abundance, and behavior. DRC’s fieldwork is conducted under permits issued by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
In this photo, you’re seeing a dolphin our Research team named “Momo”, with the catalog ID 1001. Dolphins are assigned catalog IDs based on the distinctive features of their dorsal fins. The first digit in the ID corresponds to a category of distinctive mark. Momo’s ID is in the 1000s, meaning her distinct marking is on the leading edge of her dorsal fin. Since she was the first dolphin recorded in the 1000s category, her full ID is 1001.
