🐾 What to Do If Dogs Start Fighting 🐾
Dog fights can be intense and scary—but knowing how to respond can help keep everyone safe. Here's a quick guide from Premier Orland Park on how to break up a dog fight safely:
🔸 Assess Quickly – Is it a minor scuffle or serious fight? Your response depends on this.
🔸 Stay Calm – Don’t yell; it can escalate the aggression.
🔸 Don’t Jump In – Never use your hands or body to separate fighting dogs—you could get seriously hurt.
💡 Try a Distraction or Barrier:
Use water (a hose or bucket)
Grab a large object (trash can lid, chair, plywood)
Create a loud, startling noise (air horn, banging pots)
⚠️ Last Resort: The “Wheelbarrow” Method
If you have another person:
Each of you grabs one dog’s back legs.
Lift and pull backward, separating them.
Turn them away immediately to prevent re-engaging.
✅ After Separation:
Move each dog to a secure area
Check for injuries—bites can be worse than they look
See your vet, even for minor wounds
Try to identify what caused the fight
Work on prevention strategies with a trainer or behaviorist
Your safety—and your dog’s—comes first. If a fight breaks out, stay smart, stay calm.
