Celebrate National Love Your Pet Day by bringing home a new treat or toy, whipping up a beloved meal, or simply spend some extra quality time with your pet (we suggest pet-themed movies as an especially nice activity). Let’s face it: spoiling our pets is a lot of fun. So do it! Birthdays might only come once a year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have more special days with your pets.

Do cats pose an avian flu risk to people?
There is a risk that cats can transmit avian influenza to humans, and veterinarians advise against feeding pets raw meat or unpasteurized milk to avoid foodborne diseases.
A growing number of house cats have been infected with highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza by consuming infected raw food or unpasteurized milk, raising concerns about pets as intermediate hosts between birds or cows and humans. Although the risk is very low, H7N2 avian influenza was transmitted from a cat to a veterinarian in 2016, and if H5N1 reassorts, it could cause a pandemic, says virologist Suresh Kuchipudi, who has studied avian influenza in cats. Even without the additional risk from avian influenza, veterinarians discourage feeding pets raw meat or unpasteurized milk because they pose risks for salmonellosis, listeriosis and other foodborne diseases.

January is Walk Your Dog Month

January is Walk Your Dog Month, designed to encourage a time to encourage us to take our dogs for walks more often. Not only is it good physical activity, but it provides mental stimulation for your dog to smell, see, and hear beyond the limits of your yard. To maximize these benefits, it’s important to design a safe walking program, and to consider the risks of disease and injury to both participants. There are simple precautions you can take to help keep everyone safe.

Veterinarians urge cat owners to minimize exposure to potential avian influenza sources

Cats can get infected with highly pathogenic avian influenza by consuming raw or undercooked meat or unpasteurized milk, or through contact with infected people, wild birds or other animals, according to the AVMA, and it's a good idea to minimize pets' exposure to potential sources, says veterinarian Ryan Steen. Dogs are also susceptible to avian influenza, but no cases in dogs have been confirmed in the current outbreak. Veterinarians Amber Karwacki and Zack Glantz say to contact a veterinarian immediately if a pet shows signs of infection, including unsteadiness, tremors, seizures, severe lethargy, signs of respiratory illness or heavy discharge from the eyes or nose.

"Christmas" will have fresh breath for the holidays😎😁

Have pets teeth cleaned before this happens

When it comes to dental issues in pets, oral bacteria is a big component.
And bacteria are usually the cause of periodontal(gum) disease in pets.

Many types of bacteria are found in the oral cavity, and changes in the microbial community can disturb the equilibrium of the oral ecosystem, allowing disease to begin or intensify.

In uncomplicated cases, oral bacteria as a component of plaque and calculus can be effectively managed with complete dental cleaning (descale and polish) and effective home care.

Any level of home care (eg, chews that decrease plaque and tartar, chews that can impact the bacteria of the oral cavity) can play an important role in the complete dental care of a dog.

Scientists use satellites, tiny transmitters to track animal behavior

Scientists will be tracking the movement of thousands of dogs, birds, farm animals, wild animals and insects from a dedicated satellite to study migration, disease transmission and whether animals respond to signs of imminent events like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Scientists hope to eventually establish a global network of observation satellites to monitor tagged animals.

Don't let Halloween be fright night for pets

Pet health hazards abound at Halloween, including lighted candles and jack-o-lanterns, candy, glow sticks, decorations, open doors and even costumes. Pets should never be given or otherwise allowed to consume candy of any kind, but especially candy containing chocolate or xylitol. Ringing doorbells and costume parties can spook pets, and they should be relegated to a safe place to ensure they don't bolt through an open door and properly tagged and microchipped in case they do.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) says you can take steps to reduce the risk of your furry friends being hurt, poisoned or lost by doing the following:

don't feed pets Halloween treats
make sure pets have collars
keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns away from pets
keep glow sticks, decorations and batteries away from pets
If you plan to have your pet wear a costume, AVMA says to make sure it does the following:

fits properly and is comfortable
doesn't have any pieces that can be easily chewed
doesn't block your pet's sight, hearing or breathing

Per National Geographic: “DNA analysis suggests that cats lived for thousands of years alongside humans before they were domesticated. During that time, their genes have changed little from those of wildcats, apart from picking up one recent tweak: the distinctive stripes and dots of the tabby cat.”
Another study from University of Rome scholar Claudio Ottoni reveals that ancient sailors would bring cats along to “help protect food storages on board by killing rodents. This allowed cats to spread across the world.”
We’re glad they spread. Like dogs, who get all the credit for being lovable, cats feel everything we do. They can gauge our moods and emotions — and act accordingly. They have also given up a lot of their natural cravings to live in homes and apartments. (Especially indoor cats.)
Take a moment on National Cat Day to appreciate all the love they bring. Yes, they’re on the aloof side, but they’ve come a long way.
