Animal Place

Animal Place Vegan California sanctuary home to nearly 250 rescued farmed animals. Sanctuary * Education * Advocacy

Founded in 1989, Animal Place fills a much-needed niche of farm animal rescue, sanctuary, education, and adoption. Animal Place is one of the largest and oldest animal sanctuaries in the nation. We operate a 600-acre sanctuary in Grass Valley, California, and a 60-acre animal shelter in Vacaville, California. Animal Place extends compassion to all life with a special emphasis on farmed animals. Th

is is executed by providing permanent sanctuary, education, legislation, and appropriate placement of needy animals. Commenting Policy:

How amazing is Babe? Lemme tell you! This 24-yr-old baddie has been dealing with two ulcerated eyes. Intensive treatment has saved one for now but we had to remove Babe's other eye.

At 24! Our vet did an amazing job and Babe is doing so well, although she has opinions about caregivers changing her wrap.

We love this girl so much.

🥳 Let's celebrate some animals finding their forever homes! 🥳

🐔 Jodi adopted mama hen Jupiter and her six babies! She reports that Jupiter is making friends with her adult hen!

🐔 Derek, Blanche, Laila, and Lola are being adopted by Olga today or tomorrow! We will report back on how they are doing!

🐐 Patty & Stella goats will be heading to their forever home with Anne as companions for her lonely goat.

Adoption is such an important part of our work because it allows us to save more lives without having to permanently intake the animals.

If you are looking to adopt and live in northern California or southern Oregon, let us know!

You can see all of our adoptable or quarantined animals here: https://animalplace.org/adopt/

This is a common scam that we have been seeing a lot lately (like 5 attempts in the past month!).

Someone emails us that a person has died and left us money. Or that they want to leave us a generous donation.

These people are never in our donor database, though.

They then send a check that is larger than what they originally "claimed" to send. They will ask us to deposit the larger check and just send them the remainder back to them.

Of course its not a real account and so there's no money to take. And if you fall for it, you are out whatever amount you "return" to the sender.

We wanted to share this because we know so many nonprofits are desperate for donations. Be careful out there!

Have you heard of the 42% rule?

It's the idea that 42% of time your body and brain need to spend resting to help offset the negative effects of burnout.

Caregivers often suffer from both compassion fatigue and burnout. The latter is often tied to chronic, unmanaged stress caused by work. Burnout causes many of the same symptoms of compassion fatigue.

If you suffer from burnout, try implementing the 42% rule in your life. That involves incorporating rest activities over the week.

42% rest could look like:
❤ 8 hours of sleep +/- an hour
❤ 15 minutes of meditation
❤ 20 minutes of physical activity
❤ 20 minutes of a relaxing activity, like reading, drinking tea, watering the garden
❤ 15 minutes of mindful eating
❤ 20-30 minutes socializing with a calming friend

Remember, you are not alone You do matter. And you deserve rest.

Tell us how you plan to implement the 42% rule this week.

🌈May we find you in the stars, Mona.

Yesterday morning, Mona showed some slight improvements. But by the day's end, multiple organ systems were failing. She could not stand, did not want to eat, and her neurological symptoms worsened. It was time. Anything we put into keeping her alive at that point was for us, not her.

Mona needed one final goodbye visit, though.

Animal care director, Meg, loaded Mona's ride or die, Tina, up and drove Tina to the vet hospital. Tina has likely been with Mona for her entire life and they are rarely without each other.

Tina stayed by Mona's side as she was sedated and given the final act of kindness.

It is likely Mona had terminal cancer but we do not have confirmation on this.

Sanctuary work is grief work. And it is hard. We put so much love, energy, and care into helping the animals here thrive. It comes at a cost. But it is such a great honor to walk side by side with the individuals here.

Supporters covered all of Mona's hospital bills.

Thank you to the medical team at for everything you did for Mona.

To help rescue more birds, especially roosters, we need to find placement for the rooster and his hen friends currently in our care. Please share to help Derek, Blanche, Lola, and Laila a forever home together preferably in northern California.

Derek is a 1-2 year old bantam rooster with a big comb and sweet personality. He is blind in one eye but that does not stop him from caring for his flock.

Blanche, Lola, and Laila are 5-yr-old hens who came from a very loving home. Two are Ameraucanas and one is a black star. Laila is especially friendly.

All must be adopted together, so we are seeking homes who can adopt roosters.

If this might be you, please fill out our adoption form here:

Thanks to everyone who has donated to Mona's hospitalization and care!

Here is this morning's update from her vet:

"Kidneys on Mona look really good this morning so I stopped her iv fluids. Still some diarrhea but ate a bit more yesterday. Started steroid yesterday and may add some banamine since her kidneys look good"

We are asking about whether bringing Tina might list her spirits or if they’d like to see how she is doing off of fluids and on steroids first.

🌈In memory of Magpie

Eleven years ago, three bouncy piglet siblings arrived from a petting zoo to our sanctuary. We named them Magpie, Rudy, and Georgina Grace Wiggle Bottom (she was quite wriggly).

Of the three, Magpie loved humans the most. Curious and gentle, she enjoyed flopping over for belly rubs. But she rarely left her siblings sides.

We said goodbye to Magpie after the cancerous mass in her jaw started to cause suffering and pain that we could not cover with support. Surgery was not an option as the majority of her lower jaw bone had disintegrated from the cancer.

Magpie loved everyone. She learned to be extra kind under the care and tutelage of senior-states-pig Mishka.

Magpie had a squishy face and a big, beautiful belly. And she loved her life here so much. If we could have fixed her, we would have. It was a deep honor giving her 11 years of wonder and joy.

Fly free, sweet girl. May you root around in the stars.

Have you been wanting to adopt chickens? We have a little flock in need of a forever home together!

Derek is an adult bantam rooster who is very sweet with his hens and safe around people. He is blind in one eye but that doesn't stop him from taking care of his friends!

Lola, Blanche, and Laila are 5-yr-old Ameraucana hens. They were well loved and Laila is especially social!

All four are at our Petaluma Rescue & Adoption Center but can be transported to a loving home in northern California.

If interested, please apply to adopt!

Congratulations to Patricia, who had the distinct honor of adopting guinea pigs Artemis and Potato. These two boys were staff favorites and we are so excited for their next journey!
