Dear Coraline,

We have wanted to write this letter for a very long time, and now that the day is finally here, we are finding it much harder than we imagined.

Since October 7, 2025, you have been part of our everyday life. You made your home in Mrs. Patty’s office, and before long, you became part of her routine in a way that felt permanent. You were there through the busy days, the quiet moments, the phone calls, the paperwork, and everything in between. Nearly eleven months of simply being there, being Cora, and making yourself impossible not to love.

And Patty loved you deeply.

You adored her, too. That much was never a secret.

You were sweet and easygoing, happy to take life as it came, and somehow always managed to carry exactly the right amount of diva with you. You were beautiful, funny, affectionate, and so completely yourself. For all those months, we watched you settle into the life we could give you while we waited for the one we knew was still coming.

Your person.

There were days when other cats went home and you stayed. Weeks turned into months. We kept hoping that the next person who walked through our doors would stop, look at you, and see what we saw.

Today, someone finally did.

Today, someone fell in love with you.

Cora, you are going home.

There is so much joy in writing those words, and if we are being truthful, there are tears too. Because that is the strange, beautiful bargain of shelter work. We spend our days hoping animals will leave us, and then we love them so much that saying goodbye hurts.

But that is what we are here to do.

We love them while they wait.

We learn who they are. We make room for them in our days. We celebrate the little things. We worry about them. We spoil them. We tell anyone who will listen why they are special. We keep believing in the home that has not found them yet.

And then, when that person finally walks through the door, we let them go.

That is the magic of the Animal Welfare League.

Cora, tomorrow Mrs. Patty’s office will be quieter. There will be a space in her day where you have been for almost eleven months, and we know she is going to feel it.

But we would take that empty space a thousand times over if it means you get this.

A home.

A family.

A person who looked at our sweet senior girl and decided that the waiting was over.

So go be loved, Coraline. Go be spoiled. Go settle into your new life with that calm little confidence of yours and just enough diva to make sure everyone understands the arrangement. Go make yourself part of somebody else’s everyday.

We will miss you more than we can say.

But we are so, so happy to have the chance to say goodbye.

Happy forever, Cora. We loved you all the way to this moment. Now it is your family’s turn.

And once we dry these bittersweet tears, we are getting right back to work.

The ASPCA Rescue Effect is happening today, and there are still so many animals here waiting for the moment Coraline just got.

We want 100 more goodbyes today.

Come fall in love.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the lawn is packed with plenty of reasons to spend your Saturday with us.

Come shop and support an incredible lineup of local vendors offering handmade crafts, sourdough, books, gifts, treats, and so much more. And yes, Chew Chew Truck is here too, which our shelter crew is VERY happy about.

Of course, the biggest reason to stop by might be waiting for you inside the shelter.

Thanks to the ASPCA Rescue Effect, adoption fees are WAIVED today for select dogs and cats, with all standard adoption requirements still applying. Animals not included in the Rescue Effect are getting some love too: dogs over 6 months and 25 lbs. and cats over 6 months are just $25.

So come shop local, grab something delicious, meet some amazing animals, and spend a beautiful Saturday supporting your community and helping us create more happily-ever-afters.

Every single adoption recap reminds us exactly why this work matters.

This week, 47 animals found their forever homes. That is 47 new beginnings, 47 families made fuller, and 47 animals now sleeping somewhere safe, loved, and completely their own.

🐶 Dogs who found their forever homes:
Cecil, Duck, Nibblet, Draco, Billy, Sawyer, Addie, Blakeslee, Piggy, Malli, Miles, Cupcake, Perdita, Thunder, JR, Shelby, and Tanner

🐱 Cats who headed home:
Astra, Noir, Rye, Koa, Kai, Sarabi, Myrtle, Tui, Aurelia, Historia, Kaylee, 0815-C26, Jessie, Scibber, Odin, Jessie, Duke Marigold, Hazel, Olive, Bear, B**g, Tank, Lizzie, Lavender, Rosemary, Gypsy, Tw***ie, Lolly, Lilly, and Daisy

✨ Highlight of the Week
Our highlight this week was simply feeling the love and support of our community.

Animal welfare is not always easy. There are sad stories, and sometimes even sadder outcomes. But when we see the animals we have poured our hearts and souls into go home, the work gets a little easier. A little lighter. A little more hopeful.

📊 By the Numbers
• 47 animals adopted this week
• 1,474 animals adopted so far this year
• 959 animals placed into foster homes this year

We could not do this without every single person who has contributed to AWL in some way. Our adopters, fosters, donors, volunteers, staff, board members, and supporters all play a part in every happy ending we get to celebrate.

So if you see a board member, a staff member, or know a volunteer, give them a pat on the back today. We, for one, think they deserve it.

Because of this community, 47 more animals are home.

THIS is your not-so-subtle reminder that you and everyone you know should be at Saturday on the Lawn tomorrow.

Share this post. Send it to the group chat. Tell your neighbors, your friends, your coworkers, your cashier at the grocery store. There is absolutely no reason this shouldn’t be the biggest Saturday on the Lawn we’ve ever had.

☀️ SATURDAY ON THE LAWN
📅 Saturday, August 29 | 10 AM–2 PM
📍 Animal Welfare League | 3519 Drance St., Port Charlotte

Seriously, what could be better than this? A FREE, community-driven event where you can shop local, grab something delicious, bring the kids, spend time with your community, meet incredible adoptable animals and quite literally help save lives while you’re doing it.

And this weekend, we’re turning things up even more. The ASPCA Rescue Effect applies to select dogs and cats, meaning their adoption fees are WAIVED while all normal adoption requirements still apply. We’ll be sharing just a few of those animals here, but there are so many more waiting for their chance.

Animals not included in the Rescue Effect still have something to celebrate, too: dogs over 6 months and 25 lbs. and cats over 6 months are just $25.

This event is for kids, adults, families, shoppers, food lovers, animal lovers, and anyone looking for a genuinely great way to spend a Saturday. Come for the vendors. Come for the treats. Come for the animals. Come because your community shows up when it matters.

We WILL see you there.

Can’t make it Saturday? We’re not letting you off that easily. Join us Sunday for Sunday on the Lawn, our mini version of SOTL. The market may be smaller, but the adoption opportunities will still be BIG, and the Rescue Effect continues through the weekend.

Share this. Bring somebody. Let’s make this one HUGE.

Happy Friday, everyone!

This week’s Friday Foster Feature belongs to Zena, a sweetheart of a senior who has quietly mastered the art of becoming part of your life.

Her foster, Jim, describes her as attentive, affectionate, intelligent, and obedient. When she is not enjoying a well-earned nap, Zena is usually following her people from room to room, keeping tabs on whatever they are doing and making sure she is included.

And if you head toward the garage? Zena will probably beat you to the car door.

She may not be looking for marathon walks these days, but she is wonderfully easy on leash and still loves being included in an outing. At home, she is just as easygoing. She is not a digger, an escape artist, or a professional dinner-table negotiator. She simply wants companionship, affection, and a place beside her people.

Jim may have said it best: Zena is the kind of dog who becomes part of your life before you even realize it.

If you have been hoping for a gentle senior companion with plenty of love left to give, Zena may be exactly who you have been waiting for.

Champ Jaxon is turning 16, and he’s using his birthday to do something pretty incredible for our animals!

On September 5th from 4–7 PM, Champ is taking over The Celtic Ray Public House for a special birthday fundraiser show benefiting the Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County!

Come out, catch the show, celebrate Sweet 16 with Champ, and bring a donation for the animals currently counting on us. Food, supplies, monetary donations... it all adds up to full bellies, comfy kennels, medical care, and more second chances.

We can’t think of a better birthday wish than a packed house and a whole lot of love for shelter pets.

September 5 | 4–7 PM | The Celtic Ray Public House

Help us wish Champ the happiest 16th and show him just how BIG this community can show up for animals in need!

☀️ Tongue’s Out Thursday Feature: Scooby-Doo! 👅

Ruh-roh... we found another pup who understood the Tongue’s Out Thursday assignment perfectly.

Scooby-Doo is a three-year-old, 20-pound little guy who recently found himself back at AWL after his owner’s health made it difficult to continue caring for him. His former owner had nothing negative to say about him, just that this sweet boy needs a little time to warm up.
Scooby can be a little unsure when meeting someone new, but give him a chance to get comfortable and his personality starts to peek through. He’s friendly, playful, happy, goofy, energetic, crate trained, and house-trained. He just needs someone willing to let him settle in at his own pace.
At only 20 pounds, he’s also the perfect little sidekick for someone looking for a smaller companion with plenty of personality.

Scooby-Doo has already lost the home and person he knew. We’d love for his next stop to be the one that lasts forever. Come meet him at Animal Welfare League of Charlotte County!
