Originally called the African Lion Dog, this breed was used to track; but not kill lions. You can see the independence and strength still.

There is a definite 'ridge' that starts right behind the shoulder and follows the back to the point before the tail. The ridge is formed by the hair growing
in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. This is the Hallmark for this breed.

This is what some people call a Jack Russell Terrier. I am here to tell you that breed name is no longer. Actually the breed name changed awhile back! (April 2003)

This is the Parson Russell Terrier formally known as the Jack Russell Terrier.

What you can tell about a breed and it's original function many times is in the actual conformation of the dog.

The tail and low stance might lead you to think of a dog used to get into burrows. True, and the tail many times was a handle to get the dog out!

But - the Russell is a fox hunter. Always has been. Not meant to kill but to "bolt" the fox out of a hole. He would run with the horses and hounds and when the hounds forced the fox underground the Russell would take over.

What many Americans think are a "Jack Russell" (the low and long unbalanced body type) would be unthinkable by Rev. Parson.

Actually the Bouvier des Flandres (Boo-vee-A - dey flahn-druh) has always been a Herding breed and belongs to that group in the AKC. From their beginnings in Belgium to today the breed will herd just about anything that they can!

Today this breed also makes a very good guard dog of both cattle and possessions/people - their size is impressive and that coat! Oh my.

It’s said that among dogs, only the Bloodhound’s nose is more accurate and there are so many patterns in this breed - I have done quite a few and haven't tired yet of illustrating them.

P I C K - A - S I Z E

This is the middle size of the Schnauzers, a Standard Schnauzer. Did you know there were 3 sizes?

I can tell the difference in the sizes by just looking but to most people the 3 sizes look the same. ⠀⠀⠀

Interesting fact: The Standard Schnauzer is actually the prototype for the Miniature and the Giant Schnauzer. I'd say the breed did good!

I have done a few ACD's in the past but when I looked through the grid - I saw that it has been awhile since I've added a new illustration for this breed! I enjoy creating these dogs in motion, they are so fun.

This dog has several names. I have stick to the ACD, or Australian Cattle Dog for now. Originally it was the Queensland Heeler or Australian Heeler. Some even call these dogs Blues.

V I G O R O U S

No one can doubt the confident and muscled Rottweiler.
I go back and forth within all of the Dog Groups and illustrate smaller and even some 'fluff' breeds to this serious-at-work breed, the Rottweiler.

You might find it interesting to learn that the Rottweiler was around in the Roman times. The Romans needed a dog to help guard and move their herds with them as they went to conquer more lands. Using some Asian Mastiff-types they developed a breed that suited this task.

Fast Forward to in the town of Rottweiler and the breed was developed to help move cattle to market and to be a protector - giving them the nickname 'the butcher's dog'.

Once the cattle trade turned to using the railways the breed was utilized as a police dog and even search and rescue.
The breed has changed little since 1901. Isn't that crazy!?⠀

T O - T H E - P O I N T

This breed's name says clearly what it is! All wrapped up in such style and grace, the Pointer's (English) job description is in it's name.

I have illustrated the breed "pointing" so I chose to do one standing.... I always love all the ticking and other spots. Every dog is a little different. It is a trademark of the breed.
I think I will do a head study next - their heads are so distinctive.

It is interesting to note that the breed starts to "point" sometime after 2 months of age. That must be a special thing to watch!
