Animal welfare work can be deeply rewarding, but it can also ask more from us than we realize.

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Deborah Blum, Founder and Executive Director of Goatlandia Farm Animal Sanctuary, shares how a series of unexpected career paths eventually led her to create a sanctuary for farm animals.

Deborah talks about discovering the realities of animal agriculture, transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, and realizing that farm animals often don't have the same visibility or support as dogs and cats.

Today, Goatlandia cares for around 150–175 animals and has built a model that goes beyond lifelong sanctuary care. The organization also facilitates adoptions and fostering, hosts food and educational experiences, operates a thrift store, and is developing its organic farm.

Deborah also opens up about one of the biggest lessons she's learned after 11 years in sanctuary work: taking care of yourself is part of taking care of the animals. She shares how compassion fatigue and burnout can affect people in animal welfare and why rest, teamwork, and knowing when to step back are essential.

What happens when veterinary care becomes too expensive for the families who need it?

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Jessica Lopez, founder of The PAW Mission, talks about the rising cost of veterinary care and what it means for families in her community.

Jessica explains that some general practices can charge hundreds of dollars for spay and neuter services, while The PAW Mission charges a fraction of that cost because their goal is to make care more accessible.

At the end of the day, she says the goal is simple: making sure animals receive the care they need.

What if the most important thing you look for in a new hire can't be taught?

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Jessica Lopez, founder of The PAW Mission, explains why she looks beyond technical skills when building her team.

Jessica says she can train people on the skills they need, but she can't teach them how to be kind or compassionate. For her, personality, thought process, and how someone fits into the team matter just as much as their technical abilities.

She also talks about the responsibility leaders have to protect passionate employees from burnout and help them stay in the field for the long term.

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Jessica Lopez, Executive Director of The PAW Mission, shares how her organization is working to expand access to affordable veterinary care and high-volume spay and neuter.

Jessica talks about the barriers that can keep families from accessing veterinary services and why animal welfare organizations need to look beyond the traditional ways of delivering care.

Through The PAW Mission’s veterinary services, community partnerships, mobile programs, and education efforts, Jessica is focused on bringing resources closer to the people and pets who need them.

She also shares how her experiences working directly with communities have shaped her approach to animal welfare and why meaningful change starts with listening, building trust, and meeting people where they are.

What if some of the rules shaping animal welfare today only exist because nobody stopped to ask why they were created in the first place?

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Kristen Davidson, Executive Director of Brightside Animal Center, talks about what it takes to keep an animal welfare organization moving forward in a changing field.

Kristen shares how Brightside has made programmatic changes that have contributed to higher adoption numbers, while also emphasizing the importance of staying open to new ideas and being willing to revisit policies and procedures.

What happens when the challenges facing your community don’t look like the challenges anywhere else?

In this episode of the Top Dog Podcast, Anna Neubauer, President and CEO of the Hawaiian Humane Society, takes us inside the unique realities of leading animal welfare on Oahu.

The Hawaiian Humane Society is Oahu’s only open-admission shelter and takes in roughly 13,000 animals each year. But being on an island creates challenges that require a different kind of thinking. From the large population of free-roaming cats and limited veterinary capacity to the difficulty of transferring animals and building connections with organizations outside Hawaii, Anna has learned that success often comes down to creativity, collaboration, and making the most of the resources already available.

Anna also reflects on how animal welfare itself has changed throughout her career, moving from a more transactional model toward proactive, community-centered work. She talks about listening to the community, developing future leaders, strengthening partnerships, and creating organizations that can continue making an impact long after a leader moves on.

It’s a thoughtful conversation about leadership, adaptability, collaboration, and building an animal welfare organization that truly belongs to its community.
