Philadelphia Zoo

Philadelphia Zoo Philadelphia Zoo is home to 1,900 animals, many rare and endangered. Check our website for hours.

Situated on 42 acres of beautiful gardens, the Philadelphia Zoo is home to nearly 1,700 animals, many rare and endangered. Gorillas, African lions, Amur tigers, a white rhino, giraffes and more call this oasis home. As Philadelphia’s leading cultural destination the Zoo boasts award-winning exhibits such as Zoo360, KidZooU, Big Cats Falls, McNeil Avian Center, and PECO Primate Reserve. Zoo360 is a

one of a kind animal exploration system that allows small primates, great apes, big cats and now meerkats to travel and discover the Zoo’ s campus. KidZooU: Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo & Faris Family Education Center offers displays and hands-on learning along with and rare and unusual goats, sheep, chickens, mini horses and ducks for toddlers to tweens. KidZooU changes the Zoo experience for both animals and guests alike. The outdoor exhibit area includes a 400-foot trail for rare sheep and goats, and a “goat bridge” built above the KidZooU entrance. While the goats scale their own supersize tower, children can climb a parallel structure. Indoors, families will marvel at a world teeming with coral reef fish, colorful parakeets, desert ants, and other extraordinary animals. Interactive exhibits show visitors how saving energy and recycling can help save wildlife. By connecting people with wildlife, the Philadelphia Zoo creates joyful discovery and inspires action for animals and habitats. As the region’s leading family destination, the Zoo welcomed more than 1.2 million visitors last year and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Finishing up our National Zoo Keeper Week staff highlights!! 🎉🦚

👋 This is Kathleen, a bird keeper! We asked her: What's something guests should look for when visiting the Zoo?

"I'm a little biased, but I recommend visiting all our aviaries, especially McNeil Avian Center. Not only is our rainforest habitat home to more than 30 species, but we have two very special Cabot's tragopan chicks growing up in our Shade Grown Coffee Exhibit. There are only about 30 of these birds in any U.S. Zoo, and our breeding pair is very valuable to the genetics of the population in human care. This is the first time the mom, Aunt Shirlie, incubated and hatched her own eggs, and she's doing a great job rearing her babies."

👋 Meet African Plains keeper, Miles! We asked him: What's something people would be surprised to learn about your job?

"That even though the Zoo may not be open 365 days a year, we care for our animals each and every single day, through rain, sleet, snow, and summer time heat. It takes real dedication to work in this field, but working with my favorite animals each day makes the hard days easier."

It's National Zoo Keeper Week!! 🎉🦇

👋 Meet Nikki! She's a keeper in our Rare Animal Conservation Center. We asked her if she had any advice for people who want to work as a zoo keeper or with animals!

"I would encourage aspiring zookeepers to take any opportunity to gain experience with animals, even if not at a zoo. Working or volunteering at a farm, animal shelter, wildlife rehabilitation clinic, or veterinarian's office will help you gain a variety of skills. Many keeper jobs require a biology degree, but experience is the best teacher. As a zookeeper you will never stop learning! Each step of the way, remember to devote time to taking care of and pampering yourself in addition to the animals!"

It's National Zoo Keeper Week!! 🎉🐵

👋 Say hi to primate keeper, Abby! We asked: can you describe what it's like to train a new animal behavior and why it's important to their care?

"Training an animal for a new behavior is a fun and challenging process. We start with a plan that maps out the entire process step by step. However, when training primates, we often end up needing to skip ahead since they pick up new behaviors so quickly! It's enriching for both us keepers and the animals, as it's a puzzle we get to work out together. Watching an animal learn something that will allow us to take better care of them, such as accepting voluntary injections or ultrasounds, is one of the best parts of the job— it never gets old!"

It's National Zoo Keeper Week!! 🎉🐊

👋 Meet Reptile and Amphibian Keeper, Lauren! We asked her: Why does conservation matter to you?

"As a keeper, my conservation efforts extend beyond the glass habitats inside the Reptile & Amphibian House. From incubating critically endangered tortoise eggs to collaborating with conservation partners in Ecuador, I take pride in the impacts I make in my role. For me, contributing to different conservation programs inspires confidence that we can protect and restore animal populations, both under human care and in the wild. With each frog population survey, breeding pair match up, and engaging guest interaction, I am even more hopeful that we will preserve the wonderful biodiversity of our planet."

It's National Zoo Keeper Week!! 🎉🦔

👋 Meet KZU Keeper, Lauren! We asked her: What's the one thing you want the public to know about your job?

"My job is at least 50% p**p. It is very important in monitoring the health of an animal, and someone has to clean it up! The other 50% of my job is made up of caring for the animals' bodies and minds, which includes enrichment and training. Providing enrichment encourages animals to do the natural behaviors seen in the wild, and training helps us take better care of them. I like this 50% much more— training and enrichment in particular are what make me excited to come to work every day!"

It's National Zoo Keeper Week!! 🎉🦁 We're featuring some of our amazing keeper staff all week and asking them each a question about their work!

👋 Say hello to Big Cat Keeper, J-Rae! We asked her: What are skills someone would need to be a good zoo keeper?

"This job is never boring, and each day is completely new and full of different challenges. To become a good zoo keeper, you must have keen observation skills to monitor the animals in your care to make sure they are happy and healthy. You also have to be incredibly patient so you can build trust with them. Plus, having good public speaking skills is helpful to connect with guests and teach them to love and advocate for all wildlife."
