Emotional support dog bowl.

Note…for some dogs this might be an act of guarding and if there was a strange dog in our household to which Tulsi didn’t quite trust, this would definitely be the case. Context matters! Many street dogs have food insecurity and Tulsi is no exception. That being said, Tulsi isn’t guarding this bowl. I can get it without conflict. Rowan can also lick the bowl without conflict. But there is a hope that food might magically appear in the bowl and she is ready for that moment.

Scary grate: a compilation.

With loud fans blowing beneath the grate it was now scary for two reasons. Roux was uninterested in putting any paws on it. And sure, we could have left the area the way we came in. Why would we want to put her through unnecessary stress?

Stress is a part of confidence building. As an introvert, I feel this hard. I'm grateful my parents constantly challenged my shyness. I'm grateful they pushed social skills when I didn't want to talk to strangers. I hated it at the time, but good communication skills are integral to my life now. Instead of letting me back away from every unfamiliar social interaction, they held space for my developing skills and believed in me (when I did not believe in myself).

It is the same with dogs. A little bit of stress equals growth. But I didn't fight Roux. I didn't negotiate with her when she tried to back away. I didn't force her forward by pulling the leash. I didn't beckon her with a million treats-- I didn't use any treats at all.

I moved forward, confident in my own leadership and waited for her to join me when she was ready. The tension on the leash and my body orientation communicated where I was going and that backing away wasn't an option *because* I knew she could do this. I held space for the confident dog I knew she had within her.

And when she moved with me, when she was ready to make the decision to join me, I threw a praise party. 🎉 She was sooo proud of herself. The skip in her step after she did it was a testament to her pride. In this moment, I reinforced her trust with me -- that I will not lead her into danger, but more importantly, she built confidence in herself by doing a scary thing.

We must have picked up 4-5 dog p**p bags along the trail this weekend. 😮‍💨

Ok full disclosure, there was a time I also thought it was a clever idea to stow a p**p bag in a slightly hidden place off the side of the trail. I was young and dumb what can I say...

I quickly learned the problem with this is that you don't have the same view of the trail on the way back which makes it likely that you won't see it.

We recommend carrying a designated trail trash bag and attaching it to the outside of your backpack. This is the best way to practice LNT and we find ourselves picking up other trash on the trail. We want to leave these beautiful places better than we found them. Human psychology says that it's easier to trash a place when it is already trashed. Pick up your dog's p**p! Think of it as weight training. 😝

🎶They're tiny, they're old! They're surprisingly bold!

These two have a lot of chutzpah for their size! They have taken directions so well once they learned they could trust me.

I find that many reactive dogs take on the role guardian due to miscommunications with their owners. These dogs just need a bit more guidance and they are more than happy to step down from their protector role.

A friendly reminder from Harold that sometimes the little things are the big things! Harold is a sweet boy who is still living like a feral dog in his mind. Though he loves his family, the world outside is a crazy place and you never know *who* or *what* might be a predator. He constantly scans for danger, tucks his tail tightly at noises, and takes some convincing to step outside in general.

This walking session was a huge gain for him. It was our fourth walk in and I was finally able to convince him to settle into a down more than 30 seconds. I scanned our surroundings with him, sat in a shady spot in the grass, and invited him to lay down. On this day, to my surprise, he went down with ease. He probably laid with me for 5 -7 minutes. For Harold, this was a small, but mighty act. Lying down means bringing that guard down just a bit more. Trusting just a bit more. And just a bit closer to learning how to feel safe in a world that often feels uncertain.

I was trying to explain to Roux why dogs and flowers are such a winning combo, but she insisted that they were not that interesting unless they were covered with urine or forgotten snacks....

Late post about last weekend. (Let's pretend I posted this last Monday🙃.)

Quite exciting in many ways. First, the good ways! .pawcificnorthwest took Rowan and I out on our first real truffle hunt. Rowan found his first truffle! He was honestly pretty distracted, but still what score! And WOW the flavor of white truffles. So punchy and unique. I am psyched to continue this with both of my dogs.

Speaking of both my dogs...
We went back to the patch of woods where we knew there were truffles and I was planning to give it a go with Tulsi. Before we got "down to business" we let our dogs free run for a bit. You know when you get a little voice in your head that tells you to pay attention to a thing and you ignore it...? Try not to do that.

Tulsi, is pretty aware of her surroundings and I don't typically worry too much around fences, even barbed wire ones. Well that was a mistake, because in her excitement to play with the other dogs she ran through a barbed wire fence covered in vegetation. I know she just didn't see it. (Which is why my intuition told me to call her towards me so she would go around the fence, but yeah...I didn't). Two lacerations, a trip to the emergency vet, and many stitches later....

Thank goodness her wounds were fairly superficial and her eyes made it out while. She is putting up with these quiet days like a champ and it was fairly interesting taking her home in sedatives. She was spayed before I took her home so this was my first experience of her being sedated with me. Let's just say I slept downstairs in a loveseat for her first night. 😅

On Thanksgiving, we took advantage of the quiet day on the trails. (Don't worry, we made plenty of time to stuff our mouth holes with copious homemade food with family during the weekend.) It was definitely quiet! We were the only ones there!!! It was so beautiful!

Tulsi (white dog) was a rescue street dog from Southern California. I was told she was most likely a puppy mill escapist, but I highly doubt that for several reasons. That being said, I highly doubt she had ever seen snow before we met. We drove through Snoqualmie Pass on our way home and of course I needed to get this husky to some snow. She was not amused. Rowan, on the other hand shares my complete glee for snow and he has been exposed to it since he was a puppy. Over the years Tulsi has learned to share his delight and it has been really fun to watch her confidence grow.
