Whether it's a Great Lake, a river, or your backyard pool, keep your furry friends safe with these water safety tips:

👀 Supervise always – Pets can get into trouble fast around water. Stay close!
🦺 Life jackets = lifesavers – Even strong swimmers benefit from extra protection.
⏸️ Take breaks – Swimming is tiring! Give your pup time to rest.
🚫 No drinking the lake/pool – Bring fresh water to avoid bacteria & chemicals.
🏖️ Easy in & out – Make sure your dog can enter/exit water safely.
🧼 Rinse & dry after – Salt, chlorine, and moisture can irritate their skin.

Often when your pet is here for a suspected ear infection, skin issue or an exam of a lump/bump, Dr. will recommend further testing. So what is that testing and why is it necessary for these common illnesses?

Cytology:

What is it? examination of cell shape, arrangement and function

Why is it important: we most commonly recommend Cytology for further evaluation of lumps or bumps, skin and ear problems.
Lumps/bumps: differentiate between cancerous or non-cancerous.
Skin/ears: type of infection and inflammatory response
-Allows us to determine best treatment plan!

How: non invasive! We collect cells either by swabbing with a cotton swab, pressing a microscope slide onto the "lesion" (the abnormality we are assessing) or using a needle to collect cells from the lesion. We then assess the samples under the microscope and create a plan based on that. Sometimes the plan is to send the samples to a pathologist for additional information.

All in all, Cytology is a simple test we can run in clinic to help determine the best treatment plan and ensure that your pet receives the best care possible.

More pets go missing in July than any other time of year.

Loud noises, camping, backyard gatherings and vacations to new places all provide ample opportunity for pets to wander away and leave us frantic over our missing loved ones.

Be sure collars are secure fitting and tags are not lose or damaged with a risk of them falling off. Microchips should be registered with your current information, be sure anytime you move or change your contact information, you let your pets microchip company know. Contact your microchip company, local shelters, veterinarians and rescues in the event your pet is lost.

The best way to ensure your pets make it home quickly in the event they are lost is to ensure they have proper, current identification and contact information on them at all times. Dogs that are microchipped have a 238% better chance of being returned home, and cats that are microchipped increase their chances of being returned home by 2000%.

We hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend filled with family, friends and lots of good food. Here are just a few cookout safety tips to help everyone have a safe and happy holiday!

• Watch the grill area: Things cooking sure smell awfully tastey, and curious pets can get to close following their nose and get burnt.
• No playing near the fire or bbq area: Play time can make pets not notice dangerous hazards and risk them getting injured.
• No alcohol or cannabis products & keep food and trash out of reach: many of these can be toxic to pets, risk blockages and in the very least, can cause digestive upset.
• Watch for drips and grease traps: Grease can cause digestive upset as well as still be hot and cause burns when pets try to steal a taste.

Does your pet struggle with noise anxiety?
If your pet runs and hides, paces and pants, or just acts anxious every time they hear a loud noise, here are some tips to try at home to help keep them more comfortable this coming weekend and in the future.
Noise anxiety is very common, and gets worse during fireworks season!!
Some pets can be comforted by playing classical music and giving them a quiet dark place to relax. Others may need pheromones and or medication to keep them safe and calm.

WHEW! 🥵

Remember: If it’s hot outside for you, it’s even hotter for your pet.

Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat through their skin. They rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and noses to regulate their body temperature.

Pets with flat faces, like Pugs and French Bulldogs, are more susceptible to heat stroke since they cannot pant as effectively. These pets, along with the elderly, the overweight, and those with heart or lung diseases, should be kept cool in air-conditioned rooms as much as possible.

Signs of heat exhaustion in dogs:

☀Collapsing or difficulty getting up

☀Diarrhea

☀Bright red gums

☀Excessive panting or drooling

☀Lethargy

☀Rapid heart rate

☀Increased thirst

☀Glassy eyes

Contact your veterinarian immediately or visit a pet emergency if you suspect heat exhaustion in your pet.

Whether it is daily medication, as needed medication, or preventatives, we never want your pets to have to be without! With this in mind, refills take time to process, just like at your pharmacy.

For most medication refills, we ask that you give at least 48 hours notice for that prescription to be ready. For any special order medications, we ask you give us at least 7-10 days notice to ensure we will be able to order and receive that medication in time.
