Stone rocks, and we refuse to apologize for that joke.

Nine-month-old Stone is a handsome gray cat at our Santa Maria Campus who has all the makings of a rock star, although his rider is surprisingly modest: treats, cardboard boxes, paper bags, a good sunny spot, and unobstructed views of any lizards who happen to be passing by. He’s even harness trained, so technically he’s ready to take this show on the road.

Stone can be a little shy with new people and may need some time before he’s ready to come out of his shell, but once he warms up, you’ll get to see more of the sweet guy behind those extremely serious golden eyes. He also seems to enjoy the company of dogs, which means Stone is open to a cross-genre collaboration.

There are distances that cannot be measured in miles.

For Chickity, courage might be the distance from the back of a cozy hiding place to the edge of the room. From watching a new person carefully to deciding to stay when they sit beside her. From wondering whether the world is safe to discovering, little by little, that this particular corner of it can be.

Chickity is a one-year-old cat at our Santa Barbara Campus, and she is looking for someone who understands that trust has its own peculiar geography. There are no shortcuts through it. You travel by patience, by gentleness, by quiet afternoons when nothing remarkable seems to happen. And then, one day, something does. Chickity comes a little closer. She settles in. She looks at you differently. The map has changed.

Perhaps that is one of the loveliest things about earning the trust of a shy cat. The journey is hers, but you get the extraordinary privilege of being the place she was traveling toward.

Cobalt and Crimson sound less like puppies and more like the two rival houses in a fantasy novel where everyone owns a sword.

In reality, they are three-month-old Long Coat Chihuahua mixes at our Santa Maria Campus, and their primary political concerns are snacks, naps, and figuring out what exactly you’re doing over there. Cobalt has pledged allegiance to the ancient Order of the Giant Ears. Crimson represents the powerful House of Tiny White Socks. For generations, their kingdoms have been divided by an bitter dispute that historians now believe began when somebody dropped half a Cheerio on the floor.

Now, an alliance is possible. The treaties have been drafted. The royal portraits have been taken. Both parties have agreed that humans are useful, particularly when they provide comfortable laps and say things like, “Who is just a little baby?” in a voice they would be horrified to hear played back to them.

The only question is what happens next. Cobalt and Crimson are ready to begin their respective reigns in homes of their own, where they can learn all the important skills a young puppy needs and eventually seize control of the realm through a combination of excellent ears and being approximately the size of a loaf of bread.

Things that make perfect sense in the Amazing World of Gumball: a talking banana, a T-Rex attending middle school, a cloud with legs, and a seven-month-old Pit Bull mix somehow being expected to understand what “manners” are.

Gumball is a very sweet boy, and much like the television universe that shares his name, he operates according to a complicated internal logic that mostly boils down to: people are GREAT, everything is EXCITING, and whatever is happening right now is the most important event in recorded history. He’s affectionate, silly, playful, and still learning the finer points of being a civilized member of society. Things like basic training, continued socialization, and the shocking revelation that humans occasionally expect puppies to listen to them.

With a patient family, positive reinforcement, and plenty of opportunities to learn, Gumball would likely grow into an excellent adult dog. Will life with him occasionally feel like you wandered into an episode halfway through and have absolutely no idea what the plot is? Probably. But look at that face. You’re watching the whole episode.

From the glamorous Santa Maria Campus of Santa Barbara Humane comes EARL GREY, the three-year-old sensation critics are calling “a cat” and audiences are calling “please let me take him home immediately.” He’s got the looks! He’s got the charm! He’s got the kind of magnetic screen presence that makes Clark Gable look like some guy waiting for the bus!

Picture it: You return home after a hard day at the office. Your hat is askew. The stock market has done something alarming. Your boss is a heel. But who’s waiting at the door? EARL GREY! He greets you with a chirp and a little spin before settling in for a cuddle, and suddenly your troubles are yesterday’s news. Is he comforting you out of pure devotion, or is he angling for a snack? That’s the kind of mystery that keeps audiences coming back week after week!

When he’s not dazzling the public, Earl Grey enjoys afternoon tea in the sunshine, lounging like a man who has never once worried about the electric bill, and watching birds through the window. He’s charismatic. He’s sophisticated. He’s the host with the most. And baby, he’s ready for his close-up.

The haunted house is sentient. And it would like Enzo to please take this a little more seriously.

The floorboards creak upstairs. Enzo assumes someone is coming down to play fetch. A mysterious figure appears at the end of the hallway. Enzo is initially a little unsure, but they have a treat, so negotiations are proceeding beautifully. Someone whispers “GET OUT” from inside the walls. Enzo hears “good boy” somehow and is delighted with this development.

This three-year-old Boxer at our Santa Maria Campus is proving extremely difficult to haunt. He would much rather romp around the yard, chase his favorite tennis ball, learn things in exchange for snacks, hang out with other dogs, and join you for a hike before retiring to the couch. He may be a little reserved when you first meet, but treats and encouragement help him warm up quickly.

Give Enzo 20 minutes in a haunted house, and he has befriended the ghost, taught the possessed doll to play fetch, and convinced the ominous groundskeeper to hand over half his sandwich. The haunting has been canceled due to low morale.

Enzo is available for adoption at our Santa Maria Campus, where, to our knowledge, none of the tennis balls are cursed.

The name Brownie suggests a certain lifestyle. Soft. Cozy. Perhaps served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Absolutely no cardio.

Unfortunately, nobody explained this to Brownie.

Brownie is a three-year-old Queensland Heeler/Australian Kelpie mix at our Santa Barbara Campus who wakes up every morning ready to DO SOMETHING. A walk? Excellent. Fetch? Obviously. A little training session? He’s listening. An adventure? Get your shoes. Another round of fetch? He cannot believe you even had to ask.

This attentive, energetic guy is looking for an active home that will give both his brain and his body plenty to do. You don’t need to be an ultramarathoner. You don’t need a hydration vest, a GPS watch, or one of those alarming little packets of running goo. Brownie just wants a family that enjoys getting out, playing, exploring, and keeping busy together. He’s been crate trained in the past and would do best in a home without cats.

In conclusion, Brownie is less “dessert after dinner” and more “WE’VE GOT DAYLIGHT, PEOPLE, LET’S MOVE.”

At the edge of the ordinary world, where the light turns golden and the shadows grow long, there is a little cat named Cali waiting for the story to begin.

Cali is a five-month-old kitten at our Santa Barbara Campus, with amber eyes, a coat that looks painted in candlelight, and the quiet manner of someone who knows perfectly well that magic is real but sees no reason to make a spectacle of it. She is sweet and shy, the sort of kitten who may watch from a safe distance at first, gathering her courage and deciding whether you can be trusted with whatever secrets kittens keep.

There are no grand illusions required to win her over. Just patience, gentleness, and enough time for Cali to discover that your presence means something good. And perhaps that is the best kind of magic anyway: the slow transformation of a stranger into someone familiar, a cautious hello into a friendship, and an unfamiliar place into home.

Cali is waiting at our Santa Barbara Campus. The door is open. The lights are glowing. All that remains is to step inside.

Appointments are available at our Santa Maria Veterinary Clinic and through our Mobile Veterinary Unit. Spaying and neutering can help protect pets from certain cancers and infections, prevent unplanned litters, and help keep more animals out of local shelters.
