Doug was a sweet little tabby who came to us from a TNR partner and soon became a cafe favorite. He was adopted within a few weeks by a very nice woman who had a young son. It was a great placement, and his mom sent photos regularly showing how well everything was going. Doug had hit the lotto.

But two months later, his mom was badly injured in a car accident. She called and tearfully told me that she could barely take care of her child, much less Doug. She asked if she could return him, and the next day brought him back to the cafe. She could no longer walk unassisted and was clearly in pain. After she left, I sat with Dougie and cried.

Doug took to sitting in the hammock in the window by the desk. He’d stare out the window then yowl piteously. He wanted his family. I’d tell him that a new mom was coming, to be patient, that she was on her way. He didn’t buy it.

He’d been back at the cafe almost two months when Nancy and her cousin came in. As usual, Doug was stationed at the window, but when they sat down, he walked over to Nancy and plopped in her lap. She asked what his story was, and I told her, and her eyes welled up with tears. She told me she had an older lab and wondered if Doug would get along with him. I said that I thought so. And, Nancy adopted Doug.

Doug and Marley got along fine. Sadly, Dougie lost his friend later that year. Nancy and Doug both mourned their good boy for months, and Nancy became even closer to Doug. She didn’t want him to be lonely.

Nancy got Doug a kitty wheel for their one year anniversary. He never got the hang of it, so she donated it to the cafe. Strangely, a shy cat named Nairobi took a liking to the wheel. On a whim, I sent Nancy a video of Nay Nay, as we called her, running on it. Nancy came to visit after watching it and asked, “What’s her story?”

And, shortly thereafter, Nay Nay and her wheel went to live with Nancy and Doug. Doug accepted Nay readily, and they live together calmly and contentedly. He is the love of Nancy’s life, and Nay runs a very close second. ❤️❤️❤️

August 1 will mark three years since we took over Purrmaid from our friend Nikki. Three years!

In the days leading up to our anniversary, we’ll be sharing photos and memories from over the years. We hope you enjoy these trips down memory lane.

Today we remember taking in a beautiful longhaired tabby named Ziggy. She quickly became the cafe’s queen bee and remained unchallenged until a little calico named Sylvie came along.

Thus begun the legendary Ziggy-Sylvie wars. They knocked each other around fairly regularly, and in the morning finding tufts of fur from overnight fights was not uncommon.

Sylvie spent most days straddling the backs of chairs while glowering at Ziggy. Ziggy chose to stare off into middle distance and pretend Sylvie did not exist. Visitors could sense the tension. We doubted they’d ever be adopted.

But Ziggy was adopted and shortly after so was Sylvie. Ziggy quickly became spoiled by her doting mom. And Sylvie, well, Sylvie had a very hard time adjusting to her new brother cat. Her dad actually ended up taking vacation time so he could help the two cats get along better. His patience prevailed, and Sylvie, now known as Xena Warrior Princess, is a beloved family member.

🐈‍⬛❤️COURTESY POST❤️🐈‍⬛

Meet Koa (black) and Keanu! Their human dad passed away suddenly, and they are looking for a home. They are 8 year old males, neutered, indoor only, and potty trained. They are shy, mellow, lazy big boys. They are most likely up to date on vaccinations. They have been together since they were 3 months old and are bonded. It is okay if they need to be separated; they just need homes. They are going through some grief but have been perking up over the last week.

Meet Sabrina. She decided for her 8th grade project to make spoon rings and then donate the money to charity. She surprised us by choosing Purrmaid as her charity. Sunday she and her dad presented us with $503, which will go into the kitties’ medical fund. Sabrina’s Etsy shop is currently on hiatus while she restocks, but be sure to check it out when she reopens it. Thank you, Sabrina. Your kindness touches our hearts. 🩷

Here they are, this week’s naughty and nice cats. Nice cat of the week is Ace, who is the gentlest giant we know. After all, he took care of three little kittens while they were all waiting to be rescued. You can’t get much nicer than that. 😍 Naughty cat of the week is Felix, whose nickname is The Destroyer. Felix is a one man chair demolition crew. The good news is that he is partial to the purple velvet ones, so should you decide to adopt him, your furnishings should be OK. 😬

We’ve thrown change into an old tub since we took over three years ago. Today I finished rolling it, and what a nice surprise, an extra $271 for the kitties. 💵💰💵
