WHY I WILL NEVER STOP OFF LEASH TRAINING DOGS
Meet Buddy! I had the unique opportunity of meeting this handsome boy and his owner yesterday. He is a liver colored German shepherd adopted from a rescue in Pennsylvania.
We had an excellent free time, play time, and did some socialization with a new person and a new dog, Chris & Scout.
I am constantly made aware of how LIABILITY in our stacked-on world causes us to be overly cautious and insanely prepared, meanwhile our dogs can end up chronically underfulfilled.
One of the reasons I share so much publicly about my work with dogs is that we need to correct the record.
People need to have the stories of these miraculous transformations shoved into their faces on a day to day basis so that the narrative changes based on truth, shown in long form videos of these rehab cases.
From the top, down, the record needs to be corrected. The animal welfare industry has to change or the bottom will fall out and the creature who has “grown up” alongside humanity will be genocided into oblivion.
We reject what a dog is, so “loving dogs” is now just loving what we wished dogs were, so when dogs do dog things, we medicate, isolate, and torture them to death.
What this looks like is usually pretty normalized for dog trainers, vets, behavior experts, and influencers - a dog who is never allowed to be aroused, whose anxiety is smashed instead of worked through, whose aggression is suppressed instead of channeled productively.
It’s a dog who never gets to be a dog. Who doesn’t know or believe in itself. Who doesn’t get to ever be aroused, anxious, or aggressive. A dog who is lovable to the most amount of people yet completely useless to itself.
Buddy is an amazing dog. He’s sweet, he’s playful, and he’s obedient. He and his handler have worked their butts off. He’s super dog social.
But because of the fear of the narratives, liability, and perception of strangers, dogs like Buddy go through life with a whisper of what it looks like to have off leash freedom.
That’s why I will always off leash train dogs the right way and will continue to push back against the narrative “dogs should never be allowed off leash,” should never be allowed to access and productively use their aggression, and should never be allowed to feel.
I will always listen to the dog and what is actually happening, not just robotically slamming dogs’ behavior and hoping for the best, content with money in exchange.
I am super proud of this owner who has chosen to take Buddy to the next level, to fulfill him, to introduce him to himself. We’re going to have a blast.
SUCCESS IS NOT ABOUT BEHAVIOR INCREASING AND DECREASING. ITS ABOUT GIVING THE DOG PERMISSION TO BE WHAT IT IS.
