🚨🐝 STINGING INSECT SERIES – PART 2 🐝🚨
👑 “THE QUEEN OF THE FLYING JERKS” HAS ARRIVED ON CAPE COD 👑

This right here is the Bald-Faced Hornet Queen… basically the final boss of the Cape Cod stinging insect world. 😳

And these are REAL photos we took this week while inspecting a home. We caught this queen in the very early stages of nest building under a soffit vent — literally the beginning of what could become a football-sized hornet fortress later this summer.

That little paper comb you see in the photo?
That’s ground zero. ☠️

🐝 FUN FACTS ABOUT BALD-FACED HORNETS:

• A single queen starts the nest completely alone in spring
• She chews wood fibers into a paper-like material to build the nest
• Colonies can explode to 400–700 hornets by late summer
• Nests can grow over 2 feet tall in just a few months
• They are EXTREMELY defensive compared to yellowjackets and paper wasps

⚠️ WHY PEOPLE SHOULD TAKE THESE SERIOUSLY:

Bald-faced hornets don’t just sting… they ATTACK.
If the nest is disturbed, they can swarm quickly and sting multiple times.

On the Schmidt Sting Pain Index, they rank around a 2 out of 4, but many people say they feel much worse because of the amount of venom and how aggressive they are.

Translation:
One sting = bad day
Several stings = potential ER visit 😬

🚑 HEALTH RISKS CAN INCLUDE:

🐝 CAPE COD’S MOST WANTED HAS ARRIVED… 🐝

Yep… it’s already that time of year. Yellowjacket queens are out scouting places around your home to start brand new colonies. That tiny queen you see now can turn into a nest with THOUSANDS of angry little freeloaders by late summer.

The common yellowjacket found around Cape Cod is often the Eastern Yellowjacket:
🧪 Vespula maculifrons

Roughly translated from Latin?
“Flying jerk with anger issues.”
(Okay… not really. But it SHOULD be.) 😂

A few fun facts that may make you immediately check your attic, shed, or deck:

⚠️ A single queen can produce a colony of 2,000–5,000+ yellowjackets in one season.
⚠️ They can chew through wood fibers to build paper nests.
⚠️ Unlike honeybees, yellowjackets can sting multiple times.
⚠️ They LOVE wall voids, mulch beds, sheds, under steps, and attics.
⚠️ Early-season nests are MUCH easier (and cheaper) to control before they explode in size later in the summer.
⚠️ By late summer they become more aggressive because the colony shifts into “protect the queen at all costs” mode.

And yes… if you’ve ever accidentally mowed over a ground nest… you already know the soundtrack of panic. 😳🏃‍♂️💨

Norway rat burrow under a raised garden bed.

This is a pretty typical setup we’re seeing more and more of on Cape Cod. Raised beds hold moisture, there’s usually food nearby, and it gives rats a protected place to dig in and nest.

A lot of the increase in activity comes from things around the property—bird feeders dropping seed, open compost piles, backyard chicken coops, even pet food left outside. Once they find a reliable food source, they stick around and start tunneling.

Rats aren’t just a nuisance either. They can carry diseases like leptospirosis, salmonella, hantavirus, and rat-bite fever.

🟤 Deer / Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes scapularis)
The biggest concern in our area. These tiny ticks are responsible for transmitting Lyme disease, as well as Babesiosis and Anaplasmosis.

🔴 Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum)
Recognized by the white dot on the female’s back. This aggressive tick can transmit Ehrlichiosis and has been linked to Alpha-gal syndrome—a condition that can cause a serious allergy to red meat.

⚫ American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis)
Larger and easier to spot. Known to carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Tularemia.
