A message from the owner of Shoofly :

It is with a broken heart I share with the community that our beloved rescue horse Chief, passed away last night. He was over 20 years old which is impressive for a draft horse, especially one who was made to work most of his life. I knew we lived on borrowed time with Chief but his passing was unexpected and heartbreaking.

Yesterday he had the best day, he roamed the barnyard eating grass, he let himself in and out of the barn to cool off with his personal fan. I am so grateful for the extra cuddle time with Chief, I didn’t know he was saying goodbye at the time but his last day and passing now seem perfectly orchestrated. After a long day enjoying his private stall and barnyard and getting lots of love and treats from our staff and volunteers we put him back out in the pasture where that evening he simply laid down, and surrounded by his herd he crossed the rainbow bridge. I cannot think of a more honorable passing for this great one.

Each rescue horse requires a lot of extra care, especially when they first arrive. I am grateful to my wonderful and dedicated team who assist me in this great work of giving these horses a soft landing in the twilight of their lives. These horses passing never gets easier but it is an immeasurable honor to be their home and final resting place. Each rescue horse feels like my own personal horse and the bond runs deep with every one of them. However I recognize that Chief, probably felt like “my personal horse” to a lot of people in our community.

Chief has been the main attraction in our barn for well over a year. He has graciously greeted thousands of visitors. I have yet to meet anyone that wasn’t in awe of not only Chief’s size but his kindness. He radiated a level of peace you could easily feel and he shared it freely with anyone who paused and gave him a moment to do so.

Cheifs presence will be missed by many but I will mourn the loss of this great one for countless seasons, just as I still mourn the loss of the ones who’ve gone before him. My comfort comes from knowing we gave him a loving home here at Shoofly before he moved on to the pastures of heaven. Run wild and free Chief, wild and free.
