When families reach out looking for a new fur baby, one of the most common questions I get is what’s the difference between the males and females. While some breeds do not have many differences. Berners not only have differences in appearance but also personality based on their gender.
💙 MALES:
• Usually larger (90–120 lbs) with a strong, blocky build. Samson is in the right of this video weighing about 110.
• Known for being big teddy bears, affectionate, goofy, and people-loving
• Tend to stay puppy-like longer
• Sometimes a little stubborn during training, but eager to please with patience
• Often do great with kids and other pets thanks to their easygoing nature
💖 FEMALES:
• Slightly smaller and lighter (70–95 lbs), with a more refined frame. Skye is in the left weighing in at 93 pounds (she’s prego and chunky here 🥰)
• Mature faster and are often more focused during training
• Can be a bit more independent — loving but on their own terms
• Often show a gentle, nurturing side, especially around children
• May be a little more protective of family and home
Both Genders:
• Share that loyal, calm, and affectionate Bernese temperament 🐾
• Thrive on family time and gentle training. Both are very sensitive to your emotions.
• Require regular brushing (that gorgeous tri-color coat doesn’t maintain itself 😉)
• Need daily exercise, but they’re happiest just being by your side. Seriously they ALWAYS want to be with their people, these are not backyard dogs.
A common Berner saying is “the females love you but the males they are in love with you”. I find this to be very true with our pack. An example of this is when we are out doing ranch chores, the boys stay within ten feet of me following my every step. The girls they’ll be somewhere up in the hills keeping an eye on me but more comfortable with distance.
