Good Reminder: Twenty Years Later-Why Death Investigations Are Never Truly Over
I just read this morning that back in 2006, a woman's fatal fall at a national park was ruled an accident.
Nearly twenty years later, investigators arrested her husband, alleging the death was actually a homicide. Again, I beg the question, "how many su***des and accidents are actually homicides in this country that go undetected?" Not everyone is as diligent as Coroner with Early Detection Methods built into their death investigations system like Pettler's Staging Trilogy to protect against situations like this.
According to court documents, the case was reopened after new witness information surfaced, investigators reexamined the evidence, and additional behavioral and financial information emerged over time. Days after his arrest, the defendant died by su***de while in custody before the case could be heard by a jury.
Cases like this remind us why we should not close the book too quickly on unexplained deaths...they thought they explained it, but could they back it up? Doesn't sound like it.
A manner of death determination is based on the evidence available at that moment in time. As new evidence develops, such as, new witnesses, advances in forensic science, digital evidence, financial records, or previously undisclosed relationships the entire investigative picture can change.
This is also why families should never assume that "nothing can be done" simply because years have passed. This is in part why so many cases come to LPA.
Cold case investigations are built on persistence and determination. Time is often your friend. Sometimes the evidence was always there, but no one back then had the skill yet to understand how to use it. And sometimes the missing piece simply hadn't surfaced yet.
At Laura Pettler & Associates, we believe every suspicious death deserves an objective, evidence-based review. Our role isn't to prove guilt or innocence, it's to determine whether the available evidence supports the official conclusions or whether unanswered questions remain.
One thing I can tell you in my 25 years in homicide, justice doesn't always move quickly that is for sure. But good investigations never stop asking questions and neither do innocent people.
