Those squishy faces and puppy dog eyes are hard to resist! But, if your dog acts aloof, fearful, or especially aggressive toward you then be strong and resist petting them too much!

For the more fearful or aloof dog, you can easily overdo it, and they want to avoid you more. But, if you just give a pat or stroke and leave it at that, then they may realize they like it and seek you out. At the minimum, it will help them get more accustomed to your presence and touch at a pace they feel more comfortable with.

For the more assertive or even aggressive dog, then you want to pet briefly enough that the dog starts to view your attention as a valuable resource that it may be willing to work for. We certainly don't want a dog like that to feel like it has to tell us, "ENOUGH!". We want them wanting more!

You see it all the time in today's crazy world. People trying to make you think things are the way they WANT it to be, not how it REALLY is.

In the dog training world, they want you to think that discipline, yes, even saying "no" to your dog is not necessary, harmful, and may shut down your dog, or ruin your relationship.
Does that sound like reality or gaslighting to you? Does that sound like you would develop a dog with any manners or have any standard of behavior or an entitled terror?

👉 The reality is, if you want your dog to behave well or reliably listen to you, there has to be some form of discipline at some point.👈 Some need more, some don't need much at all. Some require more firmness, some only very soft. But they will need it.

"DIscipline", "correction", "punishment" in this context means a consequence to provide a learning experience to decrease, stop, or eliminate a behavior.

Now, providing that lesson in a safe way that is not harmful to the dog or putting you in danger, while effectively communicating that lesson, is something that requires some skill and proper tools.

The professional you seek for help in this manner should not be trying to deceive you away from what you know is reality, but should be able to convey the means to provide necessary discipline effectively and safely.

I always look out for opportunities to give dogs, especially puppies, exposure to things that may be a trigger. This wood chipper was very loud, but Hunny behaved wonderfully as we stopped on our walk to watch the activity going on.
