Those squishy faces and puppy dog eyes are hard to resist! But, if your dog acts aloof, fearful, or especially aggressive toward you then be strong and resist petting them too much!
For the more fearful or aloof dog, you can easily overdo it, and they want to avoid you more. But, if you just give a pat or stroke and leave it at that, then they may realize they like it and seek you out. At the minimum, it will help them get more accustomed to your presence and touch at a pace they feel more comfortable with.
For the more assertive or even aggressive dog, then you want to pet briefly enough that the dog starts to view your attention as a valuable resource that it may be willing to work for. We certainly don't want a dog like that to feel like it has to tell us, "ENOUGH!". We want them wanting more!
