It's great for all ages - make your own flavored tube of lip balm made of beeswax! We love to do this workshop at our local libraries, camps, clubs, and events!

While honey bees get a lot of attention, native bees need some love too!

Leafcutter bees are solitary pollinators known for their neat, circular cuts in leaves—which they use to build cozy nests! Unlike honeybees, they don’t live in hives, but they’re just as important for pollination. Gentle and rarely sting, these little architects are amazing garden allies! 🐝🍃

Did you know? Honey's flavor and color changes based on the flowers bees visit! Honey can range from light and sweet to much bolder flavors depending on the greenery around a hive.

Even though you want to run and swat at the bee, it's best to stay calm. What if you stood near a person and they started swatting at you and screaming, you would think they were trying to hurt you too!

Avoid getting stung by staying calm and walking away from the bee until it moves on to something else. It's easy for our bodies to respond to fear with panic -- Beekeepers use skills that keep them calm even when they are scared. Students can learn the same skills in our Bee Brave lesson!

Ever seen one of these little houses and wonder what they are? They’re Native Bee Hotels! This hotel was donated to us from nativewestnursery and we’ve been lucky enough to place a number of them in schools in San Diego.

While honeybees live in a hive, there are thousands of species of bees that live solitary lives out in the wild. These hotels give them a protected place to live and to lay their eggs.

We love honey bees, but it’s so important to protect our native bees as well - their pollination is very important to the wildlife around us and they are just as endangered as honey bees.

Make your own Native Bee Hotel or buy one at your local plant store.

We want to give a huge thank you to Native West Nursery (nativewestnursery)!

They generously donated native bee hotels and native pollinator plants to their local schools in San Diego. We were able to install them recently and we can’t wait to see which pollinators visit first!

It’s so important to buy plants that are native to your local climate. Not only will they have a higher chance of survival, but they’re exactly what our native pollinators need to survive too!

We put some Native Leafcutter Bee cocoons in this hotel, we can’t wait till they hatch!

Bees are constantly on the search for nectar and pollen, and will visit up to 5,000 flowers a day to collect as much as they can 🪻

And we’re happy they do! Bees help our community flowers and plants by cross-pollinating them, allowing them to grow and thrive year to year.

I'm so excited to put these Bee Cups and Bee Nurseries into our Native Pollinator Installations at Horton, Kimbrough, and Cherokee Point Elementary schools! Thank you so much !!!

About Sager Family Farm

My name is Kendal Sager, and I started my adventure into farming as a first grader on a class field trip to Hidden Villa. I was so inspired, that I have been volunteering or working in the nature education field ever since.

In 2011, I got my first farm critter: bees. Since, then I've steadily been adding to my suburban farm with chickens, fruits, veggies, and various crafts. Most of my critters live at my home, though I also keep beehives throughout my hometown of Los Altos, and the surrounding areas. I have a passion for teaching and I love sharing my experience through educational talks and events.
