The Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana has now surpassed 1300 cases for this year which is how many cases we saw in total in 2024. Just last week our team released 3 rehabilitated red tailed hawks and have already released two turtles this week!

The LSU Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana is proud to serve our community by providing veterinary care to Louisiana’s wildlife.

Today we officially saw our 1000th patient of the year. This is a 30% increase in the number of patients we are seeing this year compared to last year where we helped almost 1300 patients in total!

Happy to our resident Barred Owl, Waffle!

Waffle came to the Wildlife Hospital in the summer of 2021 as an adult. She had detached retinas and lens damage in both of her eyes. Over time, her right eye began to develop painful glaucoma, which ended with the removal of the affected eye. Currently, Waffle still has limited vision in her remaining eye, which makes her ineligible for release.

Waffle continues to serve as an amazing ambassador for her species and is affectionately known as the Queen of Raptor Rehab. We are happy to have her! So join us in celebrating her Gotcha Day! We love you Waffle!! ❤️🦉

Happy to our Great Horned Owl resident, Shelly!

Shelly presented to our hospital 4 years ago as a fledgling. Her doctors found that she had a left humeral fracture and right femoral fracture. After healing from her injuries, Shelly still exhibited inability to fly and neurological problems, which made her unfit for release back into the wild.

Shelly was transferred to the Raptor Rehab Team to be trained as a permanent resident and ambassador animal. Since her training began with us, Shelly has been an excellent ambassador for her species, attending over 100 presentations during her time with us! Happy Gotcha Day, Shelly, we love you! ❤️🦉

It’s Wildlife Wednesday! Today we’re introducing Adeline Fogle, one of our first year co-chairs!

“ My name is Adeline and I am so excited to start my raptor cochair journey this year! I have always been interested in exotics so having the chance to learn about these birds up close is a dream come true. The beautiful wildlife of Louisiana is something I hold close to my heart and I’m honored to be able to give back to these amazing animals. I’m looking forward to seeing many releases this year!”

Happy May and happy Monday! Today we’re introducing Caitlin Watford, one of our first year co-chairs!

“Hello! My name is Caitlin, and I am a member of the class of 2028. I have a deep passion for conservation, and becoming a Raptor Co-Chair felt like the perfect way to contribute to wildlife preservation and support the rehabilitation of these incredible creatures! I am excited to continue my journey through vet school, expanding my knowledge and skills in wildlife medicine and working toward a future where I can help protect the health of wildlife species”

“Hi, I’m Kirsten Sanguinetti! I am a first- year vet student from Natchez, MS. I have always loved all things wildlife and conservation, so I knew I wanted to be a part of the Raptor Rehab program. We’d like to give a special shoutout to Sean Braud! While our technician, Alayia, took a well-deserved vacation, Sean joined us to learn how to handle our patients and assist with their treatments. Reptiles are usually more his speed, but we got him nice and comfy with birds by the end of his week. He did a great job and we appreciate all of his hard work!
