Did your pet go through surgery? Keep in mind that the surgery itself is just the first step—proper post-operative care is crucial for a smooth recovery! Here are a few key tips to help your pet heal safely:

• Limit Activity – Too much movement can slow healing or cause complications. Keep your pet calm and confined as recommended.

• Monitor the Incision – Check daily for redness, swelling, or discharge. If anything looks unusual, contact us.

• Follow Medication Instructions – Pain management is essential. Always give medications as prescribed and never skip doses.

• Prevent Licking or Chewing – An e-collar or surgical suit can stop your pet from interfering with the incision.

Plants are popular this time of year. However, while you’re choosing plants for the yard or bringing plants indoors, make sure to avoid the following:

❌ Lilies, Sago Palm, Tulips, Azalea, Oleander, Castor Bean, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, Yew, Amaryllis, Autumn Crocus, Chrysanthemum, English Ivy, Pothos and Schefflera

Instead, try pet-friendly plants!

✔️ Bamboo, Basil, Catnip, Chamomile, Lavender, Marigolds, Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme, Violets, and Wheat Grass

With us in the midst of summer, we want to make sure your pets are safe! Some things to remember are:

🥵 Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, seizures, bloody stool, and vomiting, to name a few

🌡️ NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. (Even with the window cracked! Studies have found that cracking the window has very little effect on the temperature inside the car.)

🚗 Educate your family and friends about the risks of leaving their pets in the car so they can keep their animals safe as well!

Happy Independence Day!

Fourth of July festivities are fun and filled with celebrations; however, we must remember to keep our pets safe and happy.

Reminders for the holiday:
• Take your pet for a walk or play with them to get some energy out before the celebrations begin.
• Don’t leave your pet outside during fireworks. Place them inside with food, water, and maybe their favorite toy.
• Keep party food and alcohol away from your pet.
• Make sure your pets are wearing ID tags and their chip information is up-to-date.
• Clean up hazardous foods, drinks, and other items immediately after the festivities.

Tomatoes are a popular garden crop this time of year. 🍅 However, green tomatoes contain solanine which can put our pets at risk. In most cases, we can see gastrointestinal irritation even with a small amount ingested.

Symptoms with larger ingestions can include: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, weakness, confusion, dilated pupils, depression, and increased heart rate.

June 22 is National Pet Choking Prevention Day! 🚨

Did you know that choking is one of the most common pet emergencies we see at Uintah Pet Emergency? From toys and bones to household items, it only takes a second for a curious pup or kitty to get into trouble.

Here’s how you can help prevent choking at home:
• Choose size-appropriate toys. They should not fit completely in their mouths.
• Supervise treat time.
• Avoid giving cooked bones.
• Keep small objects out of reach.

If your pet is choking and you're unsure what to do, don’t wait. Come see us immediately.

Heading to the pool, beach or lake with your pet this summer? Keep them safe with these quick water safety tips:

• Start in shallow water and stay close.
• Never force your pet to swim. Let them go at their own pace.
• Support their back end to help them float.
• Use a leash at first to keep them nearby.
• Consider a pet life jacket, especially for swimmers who get tired more quickly.

And don’t forget—if the ground is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!

We've recently treated several cases of mushroom poisoning in dogs. With the recent moisture and warm weather, wild mushrooms are popping up in yards, parks, and trails across the region. Although 99% of mushrooms are harmless, that 1% can prove to be quite deadly if left untreated. Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to tell the safe ones from the toxic ones without expert knowledge. While some mushrooms just irritate the GI system, others affect the central nervous system, and some will break down vital organs such as the kidneys or liver.

⚠️ What You Can Do:

• Check your yard regularly and remove any mushrooms you find.
• Keep your dog leashed and be observant on walks and hikes, especially in shadowy areas.
• If you suspect your pet has eaten a mushroom, don’t wait — bring them in immediately. Time is critical. We also recommend taking a picture of a similar nearby mushroom, including the gills (the underside of the mushroom), to help identify the species.
