PUNXSUTAWNEY, PA – July 4, 2025 – The ELK Run Fire Department is proud to announce a significant expansion of its emergency response capabilities with the establishment of a new, multifaceted Search and Rescue (SAR) team. This hybrid team will integrate a variety of specialized resources, including K9 units, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), drones, and trained personnel, to enhance the department's effectiveness in locating missing persons and providing critical assistance in diverse environments.
Chief Doug McAfoos expressed his enthusiasm for this development, stating, "This new Search and Rescue team represents a major step forward for the ELK Run Fire Department and our commitment to public safety. By combining cutting-edge technology with the invaluable skills of K9 teams and dedicated personnel, we are significantly broadening our ability to respond to emergencies and serve our community more effectively."
The K9 division of the SAR team will be led by Dan Rawlings, an experienced handler with a proven track record. The K9 unit will specialize in both man-trailing/tracking and human remains detection (HRD), offering crucial support in various search scenarios. Rawlings currently oversees two certified K9 teams and is actively seeking dedicated individuals or certified teams interested in joining the ELK Run Fire Department's SAR efforts.
"We are looking for passionate and committed individuals or existing certified K9 teams who are seeking a fresh start or wish to expand their working area," said Dan Rawlings. "Our goal is to grow the K9 team to at least five certified units to ensure comprehensive coverage and response capabilities."
The new SAR team will utilize ATVs for rapid deployment and access to challenging terrain, while drones will provide aerial reconnaissance and critical overhead perspectives during search operations. This integrated approach will allow the ELK Run Fire Department to conduct more efficient and thorough searches, ultimately increasing the chances of successful outcomes.
This initiative underscores the ELK Run Fire Department's ongoing dedication to enhancing its services and ensuring the safety and well-being of the Punxsutawney community and surrounding areas.
