🚨🐕 NEW 2026 STUDY: COULD NEUTERING BE LINKED TO HIGHER ODDS OF EPILEPSY IN DOGS?
A new study in the peer-reviewed Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine raises questions about reproductive hormones and epilepsy.
Researchers studied 743 Golden Retrievers, including 29 with idiopathic epilepsy (recurring seizures).
HERE’S WHAT THEY FOUND: 👇
🐾 157% HIGHER ODDS: Neutered males compared with intact males.
🐾 359% HIGHER ODDS: Neutered males compared with intact females.
🐾 SPAYED FEMALES: No statistically significant increase compared with intact females.
🐾 TIMING MATTERS: All nine neutered males with epilepsy had been neutered before their first reported seizure.
IS IT TIME TO RETHINK HOW WE STERILIZE DOGS?
Preventing unwanted litters matters. But preventing reproduction doesn’t always require removing hormone-producing organs.
Hormone-sparing options, including vasectomy for males and ovary-sparing hysterectomy for females, can prevent reproduction while preserving natural s*x hormones.
❤️ It’s time for individualized conversations with veterinarians about WHEN and HOW we sterilize dogs.
