"We guess that in the end, it matters less what training method is being adhered to and more that the person has the animal’s best interest in mind. What matters is that we can give the animal the help it needs at a time when it will be most beneficial. What matters is keeping our calm balanced mind, even at times when it seems others have lost theirs."

1st Day of Day School for Oscar.

This wild boy is working on the basics....simple foundational skills that will allow him and his owners to enjoy life together.

We usually start with the "Big 6" (heel, sit, down, stand, stay, come) in social drive.

Once the dog has been shown the skills, we teach the words that prompt the skills and start adding moderate distractions. After the skills are shown and taught, we started proofing them against gradually increasing levels of distractions and temptations so the skills are there when it matters.

Let us know if you need help.

~ Why It's Essential to Teach Your Dog to Turn Off and Avoid Leash Pressure ~

When it comes to leash training, one of the most valuable lessons you can teach your dog is how to turn off leash pressure, and eventually, to avoid it altogether. Here’s why:

Turning Off Leash Pressure -
Leash pressure is often used as a tool to guide your dog’s behavior, but it’s not about force. Teaching your dog to turn off leash pressure means showing them that they can release tension on the leash by offering the right behavior. This skill is crucial for building communication and helping your dog understand that following through on cues equals a positive outcome.

Finding Value in Turning Off Pressure -
Dogs are motivated by rewards, so when they experience relief from leash pressure, they start to associate it with a positive outcome. This makes the lesson much more effective, as your dog learns that good things happen when they stop pulling or resisting, and choose to comply with your guidance. It’s a fundamental step in creating a cooperative relationship between you and your dog.

Avoiding Leash Pressure -
Once your dog understands how to turn off leash pressure, the next phase is teaching them to avoid it in the first place. This takes things a step further, helping your dog learn to move with you, stay focused, and make decisions without needing constant correction. When they begin to find value in avoiding leash pressure, they become more relaxed, independent, and responsive during walks.

Why This Matters -
This process creates a dog who is both confident and respectful on the leash. It shifts from a system of constant correction to one of mutual understanding and cooperation. Over time, this reduces stress, enhances your bond, and leads to more enjoyable walks and interactions with your dog.

By teaching your dog how to turn off and avoid leash pressure, you're not only improving their leash manners but also setting the foundation for clear, effective communication that will last a lifetime.
