“Thought for the day:
I think fear is un-avoidable and find that the most sensitive horses need a hand with that. It’s amazing that the most sensitive horses usually make the best ones long term. Helping a horse through a fearful situation is one of our strongest training tools. Nothing else comes close to developing trust and focus in a horse in fact they rely on it. Fearful situations for a horse arise without any help from us but the best way to control the intensity is to create the situation. If we create it we can build on it as our horse gains confidence. None of this has anything to do with fear of the handler. There is no place for that in training. A horse that is scared of its handler has no one to turn to in a fearful situation from outside influences and will react in a way that is governed by his instincts (fight or flight to use some rhetoric). Now the fine line, the feel, the art if you like, is knowing with each horse how to find that fine line between fear and respect.”
