Winston's trachea hole is closed now with a bit more needed to be healed. The incision on his face is also almost healed. The sutures are resorbing and he's less itchy. His breathing is normal and no discharge is coming from his nose. He's bright and alert and REALLY looking forward to going outside. I will be consulting with Dr. Parente this week as to the next steps moving forward. The knitting of the skull remains my biggest concern. So looking to get his advice in that regard.
As always, I so deeply appreciate your donations. Every one helps achieve the goal of covering his surgery, hospital and after care. We couldn't have made it this far without your generosity. Please keep spreading the word and sharing his story. https://gofund.me/591262dc9

Sara Brunsden, VMD from Rowan University's Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine was here at the farm earlier this week to do vaccines, coggins, well checks, etc. While there, she took a look at Winston's progress. She was very pleased and said it looked like the incision was almost completely healed. Obviously, the bone underneath needs more time to heal. She noted little to no discharge coming from his nostril and breathing sounded clear. In addition, the trachea hole looked like it was healing nicely and the tissue looked healthy. Thankfully, all of his vital signs were normal.
As the week has progressed, his nostril continues to be clear of discharge and the trachea hole is small enough that I need a cotton swab with wet gauze to clean the trachea hole as my finger with the gauze no longer fits. Winston is very bright and alert and has been an outstanding patient so far. I can tell he is longing to get to go outside.
Winston and I are so incredibly grateful for the generous support of all of the donors thus far. Every penny is making a large dent in the very large bill. Your continued support in the form of donations and sharing of his story will also be deeply appreciated. We still have a ways to go. Thanking you all from the bottom of my heart. https://gofund.me/591262dc9

Winston continues to improve. There is less and less discharge coming from his nose every day and, while there is a lot of granulation tissue developing, the trachea hole is shrinking day by day. I asked Dr. Parente about the granulation tissue. He said it's part of the healing process. The tissue looks healthy. So I'm keeping it clean as instructed.
Winston is a little brighter each day. Today, after his hand walking session, he really didn't want to go back in his stall. Truly, I don't blame him. Had it not been ridiculously windy, I'd have taken him out to hand graze.
Thank you all so much for your continued support. While we still have a while to go on this journey, I appreciate every one of his supporters in donating, sharing, and keeping Winston in your prayers!!

The weekend was quiet with Winston initially recovering from his surgery. I was confident that no news was good news. Early Monday morning I got a call from Dr. Parente at University of PA's, New Bolton Center that he was doing very well and they were going to remove his sinus packing that day. Dr Parente called me later that afternoon to tell me that the removal of the packing had gone very well and he was breathing through both nasal passages. They were also able to remove the tracheotomy port. The BEST news. We were told we could bring him home on Tuesday to recover at home. So on Tuesday morning, we joyously picked him up. Winston was somewhat less than thrilled to get on the trailer to come home after his ordeal. I'm sure he had quite a headache. With a lot of patience and very gentle persuasion, he finally decided to walk on into the trailer. Thank you to all who allowed me to be patient with him and just quietly help.
Now the rehab, thankfully at home, begins. He will be on stall rest for about a month until the trachea hole heals and the skull begins to knit. Caring for the incision and the open hole is not for the faint of heart but as many of you know, it doesn't bother me. I'm just so happy he's home!!
Needless to say, the bill is quite high. Winston and I are deeply appreciative of all the support so far and ask for your continued support and sharing. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all!! https://gofund.me/3f0412221

In December of 2024, I was involved in a horrific auto accident that changed my life. While I was recovering from major surgery, my beloved horse Winston (Wise Feature) began to develop a chronic, but seemingly minimal, nosebleed. As my own recovery continued, Winston's condition worsened. Despite veterinary intervention, he developed a secondary infection that would not go away. Eventually, his situation became critical, and he was admitted to the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for advanced care.

After a series of diagnostics, the veterinarians discovered that Winston had developed a large Ethmoid hematoma. This mass has completely blocked his left nostril and is now affecting his right nostril as well. To ensure he could breathe during a CT scan, the team performed a temporary tracheotomy. The experience has been overwhelming, both emotionally and financially, as I try to support Winston through this medical crisis while still recovering from my own accident.

The funds raised will go directly toward Winston's hospital care, surgery, rehabilitation, and any medications or supplies he may need for his recovery. At just 10 years old, Winston is in the prime of his life, and the prognosis from his surgeon is very good if he receives the necessary treatment. I am unable to manage the financial burden of this situation without the help of my community. Winston is a saint of a horse who deserves the very best chance at recovery. Without this surgery, he will not survive. I am deeply grateful for any support you can give to help Winston heal and return to the life he loves.
